Ladies,
I know this website is supposed to be all sunshine and fairy dust, but now that my wedding is over and my marriage has begun (beautifully, I might add), I need to inject a bit of reality into these wedding sites.

Before you decide upon purchasing a dress or accessories from David's Bridal, please, please, please, do your research. There are lots of blogs out there with not very positive comments on them. I ignored them thinking that I'm smarter than that and I won't allow those terrible things to happen to me. Well, they did at the Schaumburg, IL store.

Buying your dress should be a wonderful experience--regardless of your budget--and you should be made to feel special.

I have so much feedback to share that I could take pages and pages to copy my 4-page letter to their corporate offices on this blog, but I don't want to bore you with the details. Suffice it to say that buyer beware and don't expect anything more than the bridal equivalent to a bad drive through fast food restaurant. If you go in with the right expectations, you won't be disappointed.

If you want the feedback letter, contact me and I'll provide it.

Good luck and may all of your wedding day and marriage dreams come true.

This is too bad. Sorry for your troubles.

The only way to go with any David's is cash and carry: try the gown on and if you like it, buy it there and then and take it home. Have a seamstress from elsewhere do the alts, if any are needed.

David's has been horrendous with customer service -- and it seems also to be 50-50 with them; you'll get fabulous customer service in one store and another one about 20 miles down the road will be horrific with customer service.

Their alts are extraordinarily expensive. They are also very high volume. I've heard more than one horror story about entire gowns being fubared.

A friend of mine was in her brother's wedding 10 years ago; they went to David's to look at BM gowns. The alts quoted for my friend was $150! Yikes -- for that price, you can buy an entirely new BM dress.

Again, cash and carry is the only way to go.

Their gowns are also produced in the Orient. More mass labor in sweatshops and their gowns cost way way less than that to manufacture per piece. What a price markup.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with David's Bridal.

I have nothing but positive things to say about the DB I've been dealing with for the past few months. Everything was great for me.

But like with any type of product or service, there will be great experiences and not so great experiences.

Good luck to all the brides out there, and I hope you all have positive experiences with DB or any other type of bridal store! Smile

HAAHAAHAAHAA!

You mean like when they cut off 3 extra inches during bustline alterations-- and then ask me how much weight I've put on? (In 4 weeks???)

And how they boxed up some tried-on floor model shoes for me, (i never noticed..) and sent me on my way??

Or how they throw all kinds of accessories all over you, in front of whoever is at the store, oooh-ing and aaaah-ing... in hopes of the upsells...... and when you buy the dress and have alt's done, you cant even walk in front of the nice big mirrors anymore- (Your day's over, lady...) lol

Ooooh, that Davids??

I looked at shoes at David's Bridal, too, and while I can understand scuffs, etc. if they're floor-models, the actual sweat stains inside the shoes was a bit much. It was the most unappealing thing...

I have to agree that David's should not be any brides only stop for wedding dresses. Once you have visited and tried on dresses at a local bridal shop, you then have the knowledge you need to see through their sales tactics.

Indeed.

The first place I tried on gowns was at a David's. Their veils were literally falling apart; the tulle was separating from the buckram that made up the headpiece.

They put that sorry assed veil on me, I guess, in hopes I'd buy one of their veils. Sheesh -- get thee to a dollar store, buy a hot glue gun and fix the veil.

I got a dress from them online-$99.  It came in 4 days, fit like a glove, only need to get length hemmed, I guess I like them-I haven't seen any other dress I like as much.  But I never even went to the store.  I didn't want to pay the big $$$ for a dress that you wear once for 3 hours tops, I want to spend more on the reception and starting our new life together.

Please beware anyone getting a dress from David's on-line, that the physical stores do not recognize the on-line Davids, I was told it was a completely different entity. So even though I bought my dress with the company, my name would not be in the "system" so that my bridesmaids, groomsmen, etc.. (whom all live in different cities) would not be able to get thier discount.  I did find out (not from the manager) but from a customer in the store who heard my heated conversation with the manager, that you are supposed to get a coupon book with your on-line purchase.  I did not.  So I decided to call the on-line Davids.  OMG!!!   I have never had a harder time finding a number in my life.  The number on line asks you to enter a zip code so they can direct you to a local store, who again has nothing to do with the on-line entity!!  I finally had to email several times before someone called me.  P.S. Dont miss the call.  They only call once!!!   I will say that the girl that finally helped me was excellent and very nice.  But getting a person on the phone took me over a week.  SOO AGGRAVATING!!!

They also sell your email and information!

I never did buy from them, just requested their info from the site and ended up getting a few telemarketing calls and when asked where they received my info, they said Davids Bridal.

Not cool!

When I first went to David's I took my sister with and our sales person was so amazing.  A month later I took my bridesmaids to find their dresses and to make my final decesion.  Getting the bridesmaid dresses went great, then we met with the bridal gown sales rep, omg!  She pretty much ignored me for another bride she was also helping.  And when I asked for one of the dresses that I had tried on the month before, she said they didn't have it in stock yet.  My sister had to go out onto the floor and find it for me.  I bought and took the dress home that day, thank god. And did not go there for alterations.

I have nothing but good things to say about DB.  fortunately my dress does not require any alts. as such I found another thread that also mentioned DB and as such I have also copied and pasted my review of them here...

The first time I went to David's Bridal and went dress shopping they were made very clear that day that I was only looking.  However they were more that eager to  help.  As it is, I found my dress!  Then a week or so later, I get a call from my consultant and find out that my dress is on sale actually!  So as soon as my new bank stuff gets here, Im going down and getting my dress ordered (they only had it there in ivory and I need it in white!)  I would very much recommend DB to another bride.  They are very affordable and so helpful.  Well they were to me at least...   So  all i need to do is a few months later down the road is purchase the accessories!  I am so excited!!!!

So  they are not all bad.  Customer service experiences differ store to store. You need to understand that.  As far as online vs in store that I am not so sure about.  I will however say this, They had better stick to the quote they gave me for the dress otherwise I will go elsewehere or I will find another dress for a lesser price if im unable to get the one I want.

I have always thought that DB was the devil and screwed over anyone they could.  you are absolutly right about it being the bridal world equivalant of a fast food drive through.  As with everything - you get what you pay for and when you only pay $99 for a dress, that when mad propperly costs $999, expect poor quality and customer service

I had a good expierence with them. I did not origionally want to use them, bc of the poor things I had heard about them. But after trying on dresses at 5 other places I decided to go there, and ended up getting not only my dress but the FG and BM dresses and shoes for myself and BMs as well.

I worked in retail for quite a while, and know all about the upselling. The main thing is only to get what you go in for. If you leave and really want it later, then go back and get it. They did the whole veil and headpiece thing with my dress, and while I admit it looked absolutley beautiful, I took one look at the price and said no way. Same thing with the undergarments, they are way overpriced, and not necessary. With my shoes, I did try on a pair that was very obviously tried on before, and the sales lady took one look at them and said, "You are not taking these home, I will order some in for you."

I also agree not to get your alterations done there. You do not know the quality of the seamstress you get, and have no way of chosing one (and are way overpriced).

Basically, i would recommend Davids, but you need to go in there with a good head on your shoulders, and know what to expect. Don't look at them as the be all end all for weddings, and you should be fine.

Both the David's Bridal locations I went to (once in El Paso, TX when I was on an overnight, and the one in Phoenix near my home) were great. I admit that sometimes it's hard to get someones attention but if you look around there are many other people in the store.

I also went and looked a little while before ordering my dress, and went back a few weeks later during one of their $99 dress sales (which for those who don't know, does not mean that you'll find a dress for $99 in the store, more than likely it'll just be reduced by $50 or so). There was a benifit to buying my vail and undergarments at the same time, you do get a discount if you buy accessories and foundation garments with your dress.

The only complaint I have about them is that they wouldn't let me order the next size up from the one they ordered for me. I have a tendancy to stress eat and now work a desk job. And since I'm not spending every day running through the terminals at PHX I gained some weight. Luckily my dress still fits, it's snug and I'm on a diet in hopes to help it to not be as snug, but I would have rather bought the larger dress and had it altered down.

Other than that I didn't think the alterations were too bad, I luckily didn't have to alter the length, but the price for the bustle and adding sleves to the dress wasn't too bad.

I had an excellent experience in the location in Richmond, Virginia.  Due to the fact that I *must* have a dress with sleeves (and a higher-than-average "collar" if you will) I could not purchase any of their dresses.  However, I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone.  They were busy, but they were also incredibly friendly and prompt with appointments.  The sales associate who was working with me was very knowledgeable and courteous, and he was completely understanding when I informed him that I could not buy from him at the time.  He still helped me, showing me many gowns that would flatter my figure, and ideas for accessories I had not considered before.
I can understand why some locations might be sub-standard, though.  I think the lesson to be learned is buyer beware.  There's no harm in trying out David's Bridal, or any shop, in my opinion.  Just don't allow yourself to feel pressured into buying anything.  Explain that you have a lot of options that you wish to explore, but insist on taking their business card and thank them for their time (even if it was a horrible experience).
Bottom line: no matter where you go, you have to do your research first, and if you start getting a bad vibe, excuse yourself as gracefully as possible and don't look back.

I had a great experience at DB in Roseville, CA I had tried on a dress that I fell in LOVE with in May unfortunately I couldn't afford it at the time or even to put it on layaway (I just recently quit my job stupid me lol) well my mother and I went in to look for MOB dresses and we were helped immediately even though we didn't have an appt, the sales woman was extremely nice, as were the other women. Anytime we picked up a new dress to try and someone saw they immediately offered to take it to the dressing room. Well my mother hadn't seen my dress when I tried it on in May (we're now in Sept lol) so I asked if I could try it on. The sales woman went and found it and helped me into it. Well she was kind enough to inform me that it was BRAND NEW never been tried on before (And I know she was right because the laces for the corset were still rolled up in their little plastic bags) so we bought it that day. I'm second guessing if I should get my alterations done there though after reading this, so theres a seamstress shop down the road from my house I'm going to talk to before I go back to DB. But yes I would agree with the other women here go in there with a level head. don't be pressured into buying a $135!!! viel and $200 tiara (JoAnns has viels for $15 and many other places have them for cheaper) Their accessories have a wide variety of price ranges and their undergarments while yes are somewhat expensive (my bra was $70) they really are worth it to not have to worry about any straps showing or bulgies if you're on the chubbier side (as I am). Go in there and get what you came for and if they show you something you like WAIT! and see if you can find it cheaper or for a sale...the discount they give is only 10% (that's tax basically)

My sister used DB near us for her wedding party and i went their for my dress and BM's dresses. This particular one, we have had no problems with, but i have heard a lot of bad things about their other stores. I wish we could weed out the bad one's and make a list of good one's so brides don't end up getting screwed over.

DB Glen Burnie, MD is great!!

DB in PA, not so great from what i hear...

I chose DB in Duluth, GA and my consultant was very helpful and could tell me what size dress I needed because I certainly didn't know! When I went back with 3 out of 4 on my BM's they were helpful but not pushy, and I will honestly say if they had been "pushy" I would've walked out and never went back! As for the price of alterations it is rediculous but since there is no one in my area of N.E GA I went ahead with allowing them to do the alterations but the initial quote they told me was $250 and I wound up paying only $155 so that made my day! As for buying the bra there I went to a bra store and purchased it there $40 bucks cheaper! Shoes I found on sale at a shoe store for 75% off, so that saved me a truck load of moolah there too! So, I would recommend DB but shop around too!

Frankly, I've heard good and bad about EVERY bridal salon.  I'm in Cincinnati, where one of the largest salons in the country is located, and you wouldn't believe the stories I've heard about them.  But I've also heard of girls having great experiences.

I bought my dress at David's during the $99 sale (and yes, it was $99, down from $950), and had a perfectly fine experience.  The saleswomen even told me the $99 gown looked the best--they didn't push the more expensive ones.  For a business built on upsales, they got a lot of credit for that in my book.

I've known two other brides this year that bought from David's and didn't have any complaints.  I think it really depends on where you're located.  I also think it helps with any salon to go during the week, not on the weekend.

Im extremely curious about your awful situation. Obviously Davids is a great "salon" for the budget concious bride, but if it's more trouble than it's orth I'll go somewhere else...
Thanks so much

I got my dress from David's... no pressure sales tactics or anything.  My dress came in 3 weeks after I ordered it, brand new shoes, veil, slip, corset, etc.  I still need to go in for my bussle loops to be sewn on but I had a pleasant experience everytime I have purchased with them... even for Bridesmaid dresses or shoes.

I am curious of the horrific story too... my girls still need to get their dresses.

It's like comparing Lowes and Joe Bob's Hardware (fictional local hardware store) . Lowes has fancy commercials, big sales, and buys in bulk. You buy a hammer and think you are saving money, but if you did a little homework Joe Bob's may sell a hammer that's made with better materials for only a dollar or two more. Compare a $900 dress at David's to a comparably priced Alfred Angelo, Casablanca, or Mori Lee dress (just suggestions. these are the brands I know prices for.) Compare a$300 David's dress to Dessy or Mori Lee Destination (again just suggestions).  Look at the stiching, compare the fabric and workmanship... then decide how to spend your money.

David's is not a horrible place.  It just is what it is. I only posted on this thread again to encourage folks to do a little homework.

hem is so easy to fix...
u simply fold the dress hem inward, and start using catch stitch, careful to not let the thread show though.

i personally dont want to purchase any wedding dress, partly is because all the dresses in my budget is very plain and not very pretty; and all the dresses i fell in love with is at least $1,000 and more.
secondly because im a fashion designer...why would i purchase a dress when u can design one?

I went to david's bridal near in my home town of Saint Louis, MO.  I had a great experience.  My sales lady helped me try on dresses and asked me how much i liked each on to rank them so i can help weed out my #1 dresses.  I tried on about five dresses and the last one i tried was the one for me.  it was elegant with enough detailing.  She asked if i wanted to order it that day but i ended up waiting (wedding is in Sept next year) I told four of my bridesmaid to try on their dress options and we are going with two pieces for them because of their bust/waist sizings.  So far everythign is great. I found my shoes there too. I researched online to try a bout four or five shoes on. One pair i wanted to try is being dicounted.  I found my size and it looked good and comfortable to me. so i am having it dyed to clover green (one of my wedding colors and dress colors).  It was over half off to $25.

I have my order on active list so if it becomes discontinued my sales lady can call me to let me know and i can order it other wise she recommened to order it by february so get the dress do and any alts need.

So far Great experiences.  Do shop around though and look online for pics of what you want and how much you want to spend. so that way you can say what you got in mind.  If you let them know that you are looking for say max. $300 for dress and need to stick to the budget then they can work with what you like in that budget.  I took my favorites list with me to the salon so my lady just looked at what i had listed and got them out for me.

So the David's Bridal in Sunset Hills, Saint Louis, MO was good.

It definatly helps to go during the week to DB because they have more time to spend with you, when you go the weekend they have a set amount of time they can spend with you and if you go over and make no decision they are out a commission. But, making myself clear it really does depend on how "difficult" of a bride you are, they told me I was the easiet bride they'd ever dealt with. Print out what you like and take it with you to help them out, that is what I did and within 25 minutes I had my dress and was ready to go but my Mom and Aunt and MOH made me try on a few more just for fun and the cousultant had no problem with that!

In Response to Re: Beware of David's Bridal:
hem is so easy to fix... u simply fold the dress hem inward, and start using catch stitch, careful to not let the thread show though. i personally dont want to purchase any wedding dress, partly is because all the dresses in my budget is very plain and not very pretty; and all the dresses i fell in love with is at least $1,000 and more. secondly because im a fashion designer...why would i purchase a dress when u can design one?

actually, some dresses have to be hemmed from the waist due to detailing at the bottom.  mine did.

Ok! So I did purchase my dress from David's Bridal and they finished up with my alterations, and I must say they did a wonderful job I am very pleased with the way they done it. I wanted some of the length left that way whenor if I sell it whomever buys it can have it let down instead of having to "add" fabric, which on mine is impossible to do! But in BD defence the one in Duluth Georgia went beyond what I expected and my consultant was right there with me, I think the reason behind that was I told them when I left my dress that when I came back to pick it up it better b eready or I would throw a fit, I live an 1.5 hours on a good day from the store so it is not in my direct line of traffic to go there every week! But anyways, I am pleased my my dress choice and the alterations!

I went into my local David's (think it was Irvine CA) expecting nothing more then to maybe figure out my dress size.  I had a wonderful experience!  I not only found my dress and bought it (with no pressure actually), but in the 3 additional times I've gone in there for various other reasons, they have remembered me and have been very helpful and attentive!  My 1st appointment was on a friday, but when I picked up my wedding dress (2 weeks later) it was a saturday and fairly busy.  Even then they were very helpful and attentive, helping me to try and find a civil ceremony dress and jewelry as well.

I haven't done alterations yet since my wedding will be sometime next year (likely summer), but I can recommend this location based on the experiences that I've had so far.  :)

I did buy my dress from DB in Evansville,In....the first day i went dress shopping..the sales lady was very helpful i found a dress that i loved and ordered it that day......when i went to pick up my dress she had ordered me the wrong one. AND told me that the dress that was originally suppose to be ordered was $50 more than what i was charged.  SO NOT MY FAULT!!!!! But I was told that i was expected to pay the extra money BEFORE they would re-order the correct one!!!!!! What other chose did i have but to pay it b/c it was "THE DRESS".....Yell

Plus the sales girl talked me into buying TWO Veils....one is a cathedral length  ( which is what i really wanted) and a shorter one to add volume and more detail around my face.....at the time i was ok with it but now i wish i hadn't done that.
