Because my wedding is during winter, New Year's Eve 2010 to be exact, and where we are having the wedding (Ohio) is very well going to be freezing, should my BM's wear long dresses?

For some reason, I've always thought I would have them wear short dresses and I never really planned on having a winter wedding, that's just how its worked out. But is it really terrible for my BM's to wear short dresses? Everything will be inside naturally but will it look completely out of place?

I've gone back and forth and I just can't decide!

If you don't care, why don't you ask them what they prefer. I think long dresses could be really nice and formal/fancy for a new Year eve's wedding.

But if it's more of a fun party vibe you want, then go for short.

What you could do is buy them a nice pashmina/shawl as a gift in case they do get cold. What color are you thinking?

I'm only having a few BMs. My sister will be my MOH and she's a very oddly shaped woman and things don't fit her right so I'm letting her pick out the dresses. Well, I suppose we're picking them out together, but its important that she likes it and maybe will even wear it again, which I guess is another reason why I kind of want short dresses.
It will be a somewhat party vibe. We're a fairly young couple and want our wedding to be fun and lively.
I'm pretty certain my BM dresses will be deep purple. Maybe a shawl or something will just fix it my worries. Haha

I vote long dresses. winter is cold, in ohio (lived here my entire life) and the look of long dresses makes the event much more formal and in a way, traditional. to me it makes sense. i want a winter wedding and i had planned on having my girls wear long dresses. it goes with the season.

Short dresses are fine-they can wear a coat til right before they go down the aisle-pick what you want. I'm wearing a spaghetti strap dress in December-plan to bundle up til the last minute, and the ceremony will be short. Maybe wear a dressy cardigan at the reception.

I have been worried about the same thing. my girls already got short dresses because they wanted them. My wedding is this month Nov 21. Wedding is in Baltimore, so it will probably be chilly. I didn't really think anything of it until a girl at work made a comment on how she was surprised they were wearing short dresses in november and that it may make the pictures look really weird...so now I'm kind of freaking out. They're knee length, so I guess I dont really see how its such a huge deal, i mean the reception is going to be hot and lots of dancing...Maybe you just shouldn't care about what other people think, see if they want to wear short dresses, and if they do then that's just fine.

Go short if you want!

Although David's Bridal totally botched the bride's dress, getting the BMs dresses online went off without a hitch. We're a group of some pretty big girls, and these still looked great on us.

That's a cool dress!

I'm getting married next week here in Colorado. Right now the forcast is 40 and sunny, but the weather here can change so fast... I took my bridesmaids dress shopping and told them to pick what they want, only the dresses had to be Navy. They all picked long dresses because the wedding is this month. If you are not too picky on the dress, why not let them decide? Then that way they can't blame you either if they are cold or hot!

Personally, I would pick long cuz I used to live in Cincy and know how fricken cold it can get in the winter out there....

I'd be less concerned about long vs. short dresses and more about sleeves. Hosiery can help keep your legs warm and I don't think twice about wearing a fancy knee-length skirt or dress for a festive occasion in winter. I don't really think of a longer skirt as being that much warmer if my arms are entirely bare. Having a shawl, bolero jacket, sweater - SOMETHING to keep warm on top - is crucial.

Also, depending on whether you have to go outside at all or would be getting dressed on location, long dresses run the risk of getting mucky from snow/ice/salt/crud - it won't get on short dresses. Good luck!

Unless the wedding is outside or you plan to take pictures outside I fail to see what the problem is with short dresses. How long will they be exposed to the weather? If it is only from the time into and out of the limo at the ceremony site and then in and out at the reception site I fail to see any problem with a short dress.

Outside exposure will be as limited as possible. Though I would love to get a few pictures outside, I'm not making it a priority. Me and hubby will probably brave the cold for a few cute pictures of just the two of us, but I don't expect anyone else to.

We haven't gotten the BM dresses yet but I will definitely think about adding something to cover their shoulders. But I know they won't get much use out of them. There is going to be major dancing at our reception. I LOVE to dance. And I can already see myself wanting to strip my dress off because its so hot. lol

I just bought my dress last weekend and its not heavy, so I'm happy. Very happy actually. haha

HI! I am getting married this December 19th in Pittsburgh, so I understand the concern with the "cold factor". We also are focusing more on the dancing and the fun rather than a stuffy uptight wedding. My wedding is still formal and traditional.

We (I also gave my sister power to choose) found black cocktail dresses at White House Black Market. A cocktail dress is "formal" and looks better on more people than longer gowns. They can wear them again. We are doing simple for the ceremony and then they can glam them up as much as they want for the reception. There are so many fabulous accessories out there. The possibilities are endless!

Also consider picking a color and fabric (like Black Satin) and have each girl find a dress that complements her bodyshape. White House Black Market had 4 or 5 black satin dresses this season and Macy's and Nordstrom's have a ton! I would do all long or all short.

I haven't purchased them yet, but I am getting them black faux fur boleros from megafauxfurs.com. Stylish, yes...functional, not so much. They are fun, though.

Your bridesmaids are in your wedding because they are closest family and friends and will deal with the cold for a picture or two for you.

Sounds like you guys are going for "fun". Look into a photo booth, if you haven't done so. The one we got is based out of Canton, Ohio and travels free of charge to places in ohio (Cleveland area for sure).

I would say go with what you want. David's Bridal acutally has two really cute cotton dresses that are both knee length and can be worn again. That's what my bridesmaids decided on. They even have pockets...and can be dressed up or down. And the flatter all body shapes, my sister is short and kinda chunky and the other bm that tried it on is tall and medium build. It was interesting for me to read these conversations because my wedding is next December and I'm worried about the cold as well... But I live in Central Florida! We do want it to be outside but it could be as cold as 50s probably... the weather's been so all over the place the past year or two that I really can't plan for anything... the suggestion about shawls was great though, I'll have to keep that in mind! Thanks!

As for length, I don't think that's the problem. I think things like sleeves, hose, jackets/shawls, etc. will be more important for you dear. You gotta find a look you like that everyone will be happy with. Definitely talk to your BMs!
