You could have them hold parasols (cute umbrellas) instead.  You could also have them hold a single long stem rose or something similar.

Congrats and welcome to the boards, btw.

I'm wondering the same thing...  I want to do something cheaper and maybe a little unique.  I thought maybe candles might be nice, but we're getting married outdoors in April (weather permitting) and I'm worried about the wind factor.  I'm thinking individual roses with lace ribbons.

You could do a single flower with a simple bow on it.  It is your choice on what type of flower it is.  Could be a rose or a calla lilly, or really whatever flower fits with your theme and color choice.  If you want to do candles which is unique you may wan to consider getting the lED candles that way you dont need to worry about the wind blowing them out or the girls getting wax on there dresses if it drips.  Depending on the season certain types of flowers may be less expensive beacuse they are naturally in bloom during that time of the year.  For me I am using tulips all over the place because I am getting married in April and that is when tulips are traditionally in bloom.

I might make crystal boquets from materials I'll get at Michaels.  Might be cute :)

A single stem with a ribbon can be beautiful and elegant - not to mention cost effective! If the look suits the overall feel of your event, go for it.

Corsages say prom to me more than anything else, especially on young women.

When your girls are walking down the aisle and standing during the ceremony, it's nice to have something to hold. Roses, callas, stargazers, gladiolias, tulips -- all look beautiful as a single stem.

Agree, a single stem is the way to go.

I'm coming in a little late but I also like the idea of a single flower.  I would think some flowers alone would look odd, like one gerber daisy or any daisy.  That picture in my head is all wrong.  One rose, one calla lilly would look good.

If you're wanting to cut costs our bridesmaids carried different daisies.  Daisies are always cheaper and come in a variety of colors.

A single flower, or a few flowers tied with a ribbon are very cost effective - you can buy the flowers locally from Costco, Sams or your local supermarket.  One or two bunches is all you need, and it doesn't require a florist to tie a ribbon on them.  Roses are always pretty and you can usually find them at a reasonable price, or even a few wildflowers.  Depends on the rest of your decor, what you're doing with your own bouquet, and if you have any flower centerpieces or other arrangements.  I'm assuming you would want to choose a flower you are already using.

Our moms will carry one rose, the bridesmaids will carry 3 and I will carry a dozen.  Costco or the local grocery store are great options.

Try using a large bloom that is in season for your wedding. For spring, a peony. Also for spring...If you know someone that has tons of daffodils in their yard ask if you can cut them for your bm's bouquets and tie them together with ribbon. For summer, a dahlia, stargazer lily or hydrangea. For fall, sunflower or chyrsanthmums. For a winter wedding, a pinecone bouquet with springs of holly or boxwood or a few sprigs from a fir tree.

Another idea...Go to Sam's, Costco or your local grocery store and pick up a few bunches of roses and alstromerias to use for their bouqets. If it isn't Valentine's Day you can ususally find a dozen roses for 20 dollars or less.

A great thing for bridesmaids is to GIVE them a small clutch or purse that they can use again later. Put a few flowers on the purse for them to carry, like a small corsage.  It dresses up the purse, adds in the flowers, its a gift, and something they can put their lipstick and powder it for the reception touch ups.  Then they can use it for special occasions or when they go out for dinner.

I’m having tall bouquets of Ostrich feathers as centerpieces on every other table.  I am having my BM's carry 5 medium size Ostrich feathers wrapped as a bouquet.  (This I can assemble myself.)  There are 4 BM's, so on each end of the Head Table at the reception two BM's will place their Ostrich feathers bouquet in a shorter vase similar to the one used for the centerpieces. This way the Head Table decorations will mimic a smaller version of the table centerpieces, tying everything together.  Double use, Head Table decorations and BM's bouquets.

I have found the medium size Ostrich feather at Hobby Lobby and Michaels for around $1-$2 per feather.  After weighing the cost, I found this to be much cheaper than flower bouquets, plus, just an every other bride, I wanted to do something different and not use the same old flower bouquets.

My theme is 1940’s glamour, but I am also incorporating a bit of modernism so it doesn’t look too old.

I am having mine made at a local craft store and the price is sooooooooo much lower than real flowers and they look AMAZING too. Honestly.. all my girls are actually thrilled that they can save the flowers and put it in a little vase for fall decor after the wedding. Go to your local craft store and price smaller bouquets. I did and immediately booked them!

My bridesmaids are carrying lanterns with LED candles and flower petals scattered in the bottom for a pop of color.  Maybe a ribbon tied to the handle, too.  Looks great for a winter or vintage wedding.

I think I'm going with the crystal  bouquets
http://www.weddingbouquets.net/crystalbouquet1x-300.jpg
I'm going to make them myself ahead of time, and (unlike flowers) I won't have to worry about them drying out or getting crushed.  I'll probably do like the picture but maybe with some flowers as well to soften the texture, then work some crystals in to my boquet to tie it all together.  I'm seeing them online for $50+ but I'm guessing I can get the crystals and feathers at Hobby Lobby or Michaels and make them for around $5 or less each.

I am also on a very tight budget for my flower arrangements. You should try looking at proflowers.com under the wedding fllowers section. This is what I'm using and all of the flowers for my whole wedding and reception are only going to cost about $900. The flowers come already arranged and all you have to do is follow the directions that come with the flowers to keep them looking their best for your wedding day. You can also order flowers in bulk from them, so maybe if you don't like any of the arrangements you can order some of the bulk roses and just tie a really long pretty ribbon around one or two of them for your bridesmaids, and then maybe add  a little sparkle if you want to dress it up a little bit more.

Single flowers and silk can come off looking cheap. Why not seek out a local flower grower for some in season flowers, fresh enough for you all to bunch and arrange yourselves. Start your search at www.ASCFG.org national list on local flower growers. Some do ship as well. You can also search by individual flower. Good Luck.

I purchased my roses from Costco and tied my own bouquets the day before the wedding. It was worth clearing out my fridge to save thousands of dollars on flowers and no one could tell that I'd hand tied them myself.  I think I paid about $200 for 5 dozen roses - gorgeous - they lasted DAYS after the wedding.

You can also use fake flowers from Michael's craft store. This way while your are assempling them you don't have to be as careful and it looks great. The idea of a single flower is a good idea if you want real flowers.

You can do fake flowers, like PP said, or if you want bouquets, then you can cut the size down.

If you take a traditional 10" diameter bouquet, and cut it down to a 5" diameter, you cut the cost down to about 1/3.  A 7" diameter - which looks basically the same as a 10" - cuts the cost about in 1/2.

For our reception flowers, I bought some fake ones a few months ago (loved the color, and figured I would use them either way) for 25-30 reception tables for about $50.  Then there are vases from the dollar tree that cost about 95 cents a piece.

I replied to your other post -- you said you are now having a guest list of 50.

This is why it's a good idea to wait until all the kinks and nuances and logistics of the guest list are worked out -- 8 ladies is a lot of bridal party for a 50 person wedding.

If you've asked them, you've asked them.

Bouquets are still doable -- if you want the least expensive way to go, you can DIY or get bouquets from a supermarket florist. Ask them for the least expensive flower.

Mums and glamelias are getable on the cheap; so are freesia.

Wholesale flowers will be cheaper than anything else, as will inseason flowers. But single stem, like Calla Lilly looks elegant too
