I'm not even engaged yet, but planning a wedding of course takes time and I'm hoping to have a grip on the idea whenever it becomes "official" :) that being said, we've talked about this before and both agree that tuxes aren't our thing. But I'm not wanting a sloppy looking wedding party. I want long sleeve dress shirts and short dresses for our girls. Everyone in the wedding party including myself and the groom will be wearing flip flops :) I've looked for pictures but the only ones I ever find are either beach weddings, or look very unwedding like. Is anyone planning this for their wedding, or has anyone done this for their wedding.

There are a few dress lines that cater to the 18-35 special occasion market.  Jovanni is one that is not too pricey.  They do party and prom, cocktail dresses and bridesmaid wear, with lots of short and sassy stuff.   You look to be in that age range.
My 24 yr old sister is MOH next week in this jovanni
She is the oldest , so they chose party dresses and glam jewelry.
www.jovanni.com.

Also, Nordstroms usually has not too revealing but nicely designed cocktail and party clothes in street lengths.

Jessica McClintock does lots of bridal and bridesmaid fun, sassy stuff, great for casual and beachy wear, party boat weddings.

thanks for the reply... I'm going to have to look at some of those dresses.. I'm going with black dresses for the girls so I'm not TOO worried about that.. I'm just mainly worried about the guys dress style!

If you want it semi-formal, (not formal but not beach wedding) why not choose a shirt for the guys to wear, a long sleeve button down shirt and have them each purchase or you purchase that particular shirt for them.

Have them wear their own pants and shoes, you dictate the color.

Then you have some matching but not overly formal.

we're wanting to do the button down shirts w/ whiteish pants and flip flops for the guys..  and short dresses and flip flops for the girls.. we're wanting to do that because that's just "us" .. I live in filp flops.. and so does he since we got together lol  but i'm just looking for pictures of actual weddings that aren't on the beach .. that is similar to what i'm wanting. Just to see how the turn out will be!

Hi,
Tim and I are getting married on Nov 7, 2009.

Tim and I will be wearing typical wedding wear. However, I DO NOT want the honor of them being in our wedding to be a financial burden for anyone.  My 3 girls are wearing fall color tea length wrap style dresses I am having made.  $60.00 each for everything.
Tim's guys will be in khakis (all same off white, BM darker shade of tan) They will each wear their own brown shoes and a fall color polo shirt that they will buy from selected colors.

They certainly will be able to wear EVERYTHING again, and we are not expecting someone to pay over one hundred dollars for a tux they wear for a day.

Tim and I feel really good about not causing burden to the people who are honoring us.

hope this helps,
Angel
will be Tim's wife on 11/7/09

I am doing a fairly "informal" wedding style for my wedding in two weeks.  The girls dresses were ordered from j.crew, a very simple v neck a line style, tea length.  The guys are wearing black dress slacks, black shoes and belt, a white shirt, all of their choosing, and blue ties that we've picked out to match the color of the girls' dresses.  My groom will be in a suit (not a tux), and my dress is still a wedding gown, but fairly simple, not a ball gown style.  I think that even though it's not super dressy, it won't look "unweddinglike", as you said.  I am hoping that it will just look informal, not "casual" or messy.

I think i'm a bit late on this post but... I am planning on short black dresses for my girls and the guys in white button down shirts, ties, and black pants.

I think you may find this bio interesting - the boys do not have jackets and they all wore converse (not flip-flops but close!): http://katyladymarried.weebly.com/index.html

Depending on where you are / type of family, wearing a vest with a bright long sleeve shirt (no tie) can look pretty put together but informal.
Friends who did this all looked great in pictures, all wearing some kind of fairly plain* leather vest  with turquoise shirts in different shades with dark chocolate or black twill pants.  Very sharp.

* no chains, pictures etc, just top-stitched leather vests.

Jenn, just so you can have an idea...here's what my recent wedding looked like, with a look that is similar to what you may be going for/trying to achieve with the groomsmen.  Maybe this will help you figure out if you like the style or not.  It's not the best picture, just one that someone shot which we were lining up for pics, but you get the idea... :)

I am doing an informal park wedding.  My dress is going to be full and elegent but my bridesmaids and groom and groomsmen is going to be more semi.  My bridesmaid is going to be in at the knee little black dresses with a peekaboo slip in champagn and matching sash tied at the back. the Groom and grooms men is going to be in suits.  the ushers and ring bearer is going to be in dockers (or kakhi style) pants with a long sleeve button shirt.  the flower girl is young (less then 2) so she is goign to held and escorted by two of my neices (18 and 20). they are going to be in a nice matching dresses from Macys.  all in all it is semi formal and everybody's dress wear is reusable.

Every woman can use a LBD in her closet and men need a suit in their closet. so it works well for all in the party.

Hi there,

I think reason most of the flip-flop pictures you see on the 'net are associated with beaches simply because we associate flip flops with beaches...and because what on earth else would one wear in the sand?????

But honestly, if you take this style and just replace the setting with any outdoor setting--a meadow, park, etc.--the look transfers easily.  I would not worry greatly about this.  It MIGHT look slightly out of place in a more formal setting or church.

There are also "nice" flip flops!  Slightly dressy ones for gals, and leather ones for guys, so if your setting is a little more formal, there's still a way to "inject" that casualness in a nice way, if that makes sense!

I think you should think about other things until you actually get engaged and set a date.  It's silly to spend so much time and energy thinking about something that might never happen.  What if the guy you meet and get engaged to doesn't like the idea of a flipflop wedding?

Katy, I LOVE the pictures on your website.  You looked gorgeous and I loved all the little touches.

Just out of curiousity, what did you put in your OOT bags and the vendor kits?

I think that was a great idea.

I have seen khaki/tan docker type chino slacks for the guys with short sleeved linen shirts -- you can find dockers pretty much anywhere; same goes for linen shirts for guys (try an upscale haberdashery type shop).

J Crew and Ann Taylor and tons of other places have sun dresses that would be ideal for your ladies for the wedding.

Thanks everyone for your replies! afrench i LOVE the look of your wedding party! I think i'm going more for the white khaki color more so than black.. I think the black looks more formal than the khaki does! I think we're going for the girls wearing black dresses, I've looked at j crew and LOVE their dresses...  but it's still a while off lol  and we're definitely looking for the "nice" flip flops... cosmogirl, I've met the man of my dreams and we've already set a date! we know it's going to happen, so we're getting the "small" details out of the way first :) and we both decided on the flip flops since it's our nature to wear them lol

The date was set because of it being very convenient for both of us and we like that time of year! *it's right after I'll be graduating from college* so, technically it's not "official"! it's not exactly like we're spreading the word yet, but we both know that's the day we want! :)

Jenn, we did that.  We were officially engaged sort of.  We considered ourselves engaged but I didn't have the ring yet.  We didn't tell anyone for a little while.

I wanted it that way because I wanted to book a venue before I told anyone so I didn't get a thousand opinions.

LOL! our wedding date was decided by my fiancee's boss because the restaurant he works for will be closed that week. when he was interviewing for the job the boss said "we are off these weeks - if you are getting married, these are the days when you should get married" LOL (but hey, i see the silver lining in this - this pretty much stops us from worrying about getting vacation days and getting all schedules fixed.)

im having the same flipflops wedding as you are - im having it in a park - and the whole thing is a picnic. so nobody has to deal with dressing up (i hate doing that) and everyone can be relaxed and not be conscious in their formal attire.

you can have the bm's dresses purchased at forever21 or h&m or charlotte ruse or even JC penney. WHO CARES! if you find something in the 30dollar range that fits everyone, its not a bad thing if they cant wear it again -even better if they can. im still looking for dresses for my party because not everyone can fit in the small sizes that forever21 has.

im one of the weirdos who had the place booked even before i got the ring on my finger. even if i was already engaged, it didnt feel official without the ring - and that he didnt ask me yet. haha.

Hey Jen, I also just got engaged and I really love your idea to wear flipflops and make things a lil but more casual & still have that feeling that its still a wedding so things shld still be nice and elegant! I hate very formal events! just like the flipflops are sooo u, with me anything too fancy or formal is sooo NOT me (i also live in flipflops lol)! But i just never thought more casual attire as even being an option just bc my family has a way of making everything into a formal fancy affair (which I hate hence my tomboy rebellion lol! ) So let me know if you come up with more ideas involving this more casual wedding theme bc im SO interested!!! Also a friend just recently sent me this link www.SmartyHadAParty.com they sell like elegant disposable fake china or fake linen tablecloth and other stuff, she mentioned it to me bc its easier and cheaper than renting china, but event though disposable is casual (kind of too casual for wedding) they happen to really look real (from what i saw of the pics on the site) ! Anywayz i know i have so much time but I wanted to know wut u thought of it bc i was thinking of maybe using their stuff for the reception. Ok well let me know and lets be in touch!!!

(If you've set a date, then you are engaged.  that's what engaged means.)

If I were your Mother, I would try very hard to talk you out of casual flip flops.  You are dressing up.  You may live in flip flops, but you likely also live in slacks, jeans or shorts - not long white dresses.

Flip flops are casual, they are not intended for semi formal dress and will look silly.  When you change your outfit to semi formal, the shoes are part of the outfit.

Consider dressier sandals (that are often in a 'flip flop' style with no back holding your heal.)  And for the men, consider loafers or deck shoes.

Have the flip flops available for later in the evening when the dancing starts and the formality fades.

Hey Stacy! I just went to a wedding where they used that website! I'm serious when I say I was AMAZED when I touched it and it wasn't real lol it was crazy!  Her wedding was very formal though, and I'm definitely trying to stay away from "elegant" formal lol  I don't know though I'll have to look at the whole site to see everything!

AuntThelma..  I do not consider myself "officially" engaged until I get a ring.. so until then.. I will say I AM NOT engaged :) ... and even my mother could not talk me out of my "flip flop" wedding.. I made a thread asking for pictures if anyone had them.. and I've went through a ton of websites and I'm definitely not the only girl that will have a "flip flop" wedding.. and every single picture I found of people's weddings were WONDERFUL.. for one... i'm not going to have the old navy $5 flip flops on lol neither are any of my wedding party attendants.. the guys will have the nice leather ones and the girls can get some dressy ones.. but I don't want anything with heels! everything flip flop style!

I'm sorry you do not approve of it.. so it's a good thing you're not paying for it :) but thanks for responding!
