Either works. For me, I am having my ceremony at the church I grew up in and then the reception a half hour away. But the reception site has some meaning for me so I was always going to go with that. There is nothing wrong with doing the reception at the same place as the ceremony. My friend had a small wedding, got married in her chruch, and then the reception was right there, they had the room.

Are you planning to het married in a park or something? If you are, it would be easy to have the reception right there. This is totally up to you guys. What are both of your reasons? Maybe where you are planning on getting married it is cheaper to hold the reception right there. Venues can be very expensive so that may be something to consider.

If you do hold it in the same place there are a couple things to think about. Rememer after you get married you will most likely be taking pictures for a while unless you chose to do them before the ceremony. Even then, you will need some with your FH if you chose to follow tradition. So make sure you are ready for the guests immediately following the ceremony with the cocktail hour. You also are going to have to be more cautious on time than if you were having the reception at a different time. You don't want the guests to get bored waiting for you.

On the other hand, it beats having to drive somewhere else and kill an hour or more depending on the time it would start. A lot of weddings have a three hour difference depending on the availbility of the church and reception venue. Personally, I think it sucks to have to fill the time, especially if you are not close to home and have to fill down time.

Whatever you chose will be fine. Both are normal. Talk about why both of you want to do it your way, and find something that will make both happy.

I am doing both my ceremony and reception at the same venue, just in different parts of the venue. I chose this just because I don't like having to drive around and didn't want my guest to have to do that. We are doing our pictures before the wedding though so that our guest don't have a long wait.

I think both ways are great. You and your Fiance need to sit down and discuss why you like each way. Also, consider the cost of renting two places versus having it at one place.

Good luck with everything!

We had the ceremony and reception in the same place.  I didn't want to have to drive in-between.  It saved us on having to spend on transportation.

Our venue had a chapel onsight and they are set up for outdoor weddings.  They have a banquet center onsight.

It worked out well for us.

The only reason I would have wanted two seperate places was to go more places in my dress!

I've attended only 6 weddings in my life, and 3 had the ceremony and reception at the same location, while the other 3 used different locations. All of them were unique and completely enjoyable. Smile

For my own wedding, the ceremony was outside at a park, and the reception was at a restaurant about 30 minutes away. If you go with separate locations, be sure to provide detailed driving directions for your guests - we got a lot of positive feedback for doing so!

We are having our ceremony outside on the veranda of a golf club house and then the reception is inside.  We wanted to do our ceremony outside somewhere and when we saw it, we just feel in love with it.  And it is easier for our guests, because we are having the cocktail hour and then the reception.  But, I have been to other weddings that have had their ceremony site and reception site in different locations and it worked out just fine.  It's just what you guys want!
Can't wait to be Mr. and Mrs.!!

We're planning on finding a small park a little out of town and having the ceremony in one spot, then have the reception set up maybe a 5 minute walk away. It makes sense, and it also helps save money.

We went to a wedding pretty recently and they had the ceremony about a 10 minute drive from where the reception lodge was, and almost everyone there stayed at the lodge. It was really fun, and a 10 minute drive really isn't that bad.

We are having ours at my future in laws. They have a huge pond and huge gardens ( they get really in to the garden tour thing) So we are getting married by the pond in one garden and having the reception in the front gardens.

I think it makes things simpler not having to drive from one place to another.

We are having ours in the same place. This is both convenient plus more cost effective. A lot of times, you can get a good deal if you book them both at the same location. It also is good if you are having out of town guests so they dont have to worry about following someone or car pooling. If you are having guests with children, it might help having it in the same place because kids can get irritated having to load up in the car and unloading then doing it again to go the reception. I think it isnt as much a trend as much as it is just convenient.

Trend-shmend.... do what you two can agree on.

I would take in to consideration how much time to give between events and transportation.  Also consider how hard will it be for your out of town folks to find the second location.  Of course there's parking at both places too - (I recall a capital hill wedding and a down town reception and was irked because I had to pay for parking at both locations.)

I've seen lots of church weddings with receptions elsewhere - it is done.  I found it a bit challenging to find a place in Seattle to do both without having to either rent a bunch of chairs or worse having to have the chairs moved from the ceremony site into the reception site.  If money is no object - then hotels are good at this, but the places with charm are harder to come by.

Talk over the logistics with your fella and work out the benefits of both scenarios (including pricing) and see if you can't come up with a decision that way.

We're having our ceremony and reception at the same site. We're getting married at 8pm on NYE. Because many of our guests will be from out of town and unfamiliar with the area, we wanted to be sure that they had an enjoyable experience and not worry about them traveling. Our ceremony will be in half of the ballroom of where the reception will be. After the ceremony, we'll have a cocktail hour so that guest can mingle and check out the historic hotel we'll be at. Then, we'll move back in for an hors d euvre reception and dancing.
Do what you and your fiance want. Some people think we're crazy with what we're doing b/c it's not "traditional", but what we're doing reflects us as a couple and what we want and that's the most important piece.

If you have no religious restrictions that would prohibit a faith-based ceremony on the premises of the reception site, then I don't see why not.

I by far prefer having the reception either in the same place or a very short WALK away.  We took pictures ahead of time, which turned out to be a great time for us, no hurrying, and better pictures.  When that is not possible,  at least the guest can have a cocktail or appetizer and social time, not getting their car and on the road.  Long time gaps traveling in between make a wedding a 9 hour time instead of max 6-7 hours, not counting getting there and getting back home.  Too long - an hour and a half after dinner and you feel dragged out.

I'm having my ceremony and reception at the same location.  It helps ensure that everyone attending one event will attend the second,  it saves on printing maps and directions to go from one venue to another,  The guests can watch the wedding photo's being shot while enjoying the bar - simplify things if you can.  You'll also find that you'll save $ on one location versus two.

Just my two cents!

We are getting married at our reception place, mostly because I love the venue so much I wanted to spend as much time as possible there ;)  but also because they offer a choice of patio, garden or art gallery ceremony sites that were all to die for. ( we went with the garden but the art gallery is on rain hold)  Whatever you decide it should feel right for you.

We are having a civil service so we didn't have to decide on a church and a reception site.  We are getting married at a gorgeous train station that was just remodeled.  I have been to a few weddings that had the reception in a different location and there was a large gap between the end and start times because they wanted to get additional photos so we had nothing to do with ourselves for an hour.   I think the same location is more convenient, but I'm sure whatever you choose will be fine.  It's all personal preference.

We are getting married at the beach and having the reception at the ball room at the resort that everyone is saying in.Its the same place. the reason i did it this way is i don't want any of my guest to get lost with all the moving around and all of us being from out of town.

I'm having an outdoor ceremony within yards of the reception site also. I was concerned with out-of-town guests also. For me, It cost less money than paying for two venues.

Its not a new concept to have it at one and the same location, at least not in my 20 plus years of working at various weddings.

Our own wedding we had it at the same location because it was not practical to have it at two different locations, not if I wonted my mom to be able to attend (she doesn't get around easily and getting her from location to location in a daily basis isn't easy).

We also found that it was much cheaper to have it hosted at a single location, cost us all of 1200 to have the place booked from 10am till 10pm for up to 150 ppl.

We had our ceremony and reception at the same (great) location.  The main reason is because, knowing our friends, we figured the bar would be getting a lot of action.  So we arranged to have the wedding site and guest hotel within a couple blocks of each other, that way guests didn't have to drive anywhere and our out-of-town guests didn't have to rent cars (they used a shuttle from the airport, or we picked them up/dropped them off - they were grateful for saving some money too on the rental after flying across the country for us!).

We also got married in a scenic location, so the reception was an opportunity for the guests to check out the sites at their convenience. And the ceremony was later in the day, so we could get right into cocktail hour/dinner/dancing dancing dancing.

Plus, talk about convenient, having everything in one place! I went to a wedding once and the ceremony and reception were a bit too far away, and with horrible traffic, the family and wedding party cars showed up about an hour after the guests...

It's actually kind of surprising how many of us are choosing not to get married in a church, isn't it?

I think that when people aren't particularly interested in having a church wedding, then it makes sense to have the ceremony and reception in the same place.  It's especially nice if you are planning an outdoor ceremony, since the reception hall can be your Plan B in case of rain.

Best wishes in working it out with your FI.

that is what i did, we did the ceremony, it took the place 10 min to turn it over for the reception. we then cut the cake and let the guest do the buffet and cake while we took pics. it was perfect then you dont have to worry about transport of everything. hope this helps and good luck

I can tell you I'm getting married June 5th 2010 and we are planning to have our wedding ceremony and reception at the same venue? Is it new or not I believe it will work for us also, the cost savings is great.

I would suggest having them both at the same place or not far from each other.

My ceremony and reception is taking place at the same venue. They have a chapel and then a different area for the reception. It makes it easier on your guest to get to one place. Especially if you have out of town guest, you don't want people getting lost or deciding not to come because its too far away.

Fi and I are having our ceremony and reception at the same place, we are on a tight budget so it was cost efficient for us to do so. I've never been to a wedding with the ceremony and reception in the same place so I'm not real clear on the timeline, its good to see that its not as unusual as I thought it was. :) It should be fun if I can figure out how to do it!

We're having our wedding and reception in the same place.  We got a package at a Banquet Hall that was all inclusive.  Works wonders for the budget!
