I was thinking of trying to get married in the same church my parents did many many years ago. I'm already getting married the same week as my birthday just like my parents and all the others in my mom side of the family. The question is, I think the church might be run down and not very nice inside. If that's the case, so I still get the church and over look the run down look?

I've yet to see a run down church or house of worship no matter what size congregation it has.

You can always go and have a look see or google it on the web to see what it looks like now.

The church where my parents got married is still open and yep, it's still well maintained and the size of the congregation has dipped well below what it was when my mother was a parishioner there.

Our current church has plaster coming off of the ceiling in places but it's so gorgeous otherwise that no one notices it unless you point it out.  I also come from a very small town where not much in the small church has changed from back when my Dad was a little boy going to church there.  It doesn't look run down at all.

I'd check it out and see if it's okay.  Chances are pretty good guests won't care unless they have to worry about things falling apart on them.

You can go scout it and see what it looks like.  A church is a public building you can go into it any time you want, you don't have to book the wedding to enter a church.

Attend a service, see if you like the place, like the minister etc and then decide.

Thanks! I believe we are attending this sunday! Chruches around here are locked until a hour before and after service. Alot of them are not in the best of shape either.
We are having a hard time with the whole church thing. We don't attend anymore with our jobs being so demanding. We have tried the wednesday night services, but usually get called out and it just gets so frustrating that we just gave up.

How did your visit to the church go? I think if you really want to keep your parents' traditon, you can bring out the things that make the church special to you, and decorate it so that it works for you.
When I was researching our reception site, someone wrote on a message blog that it was run down. But when I saw it, I thought it was absolutely perfect! It has a very natural, down-to-earth look, which I want, but I think the other reviewer was looking for something more upscale and classy. So it all depends on what you are looking for.
We're getting married at the church where my fiance grew up, his father was a pastor and his parents were married. His parents were given a banner by a congregation member for their wedding, and his mother is adding our wedding colors to it and lending it to us to hang up. So for us, the location is very special and I'm super excited about it.

I got a call several years back from a cousin.  She and several other brides wanted to marry in a local small church, which has had a priest from a nearby city do services for 25-30 years.  Boy was it shabby.  Cousin's fiance was Catholic and it was his family church for generations.

One of the brides had complained not too nicely, and the priest pointed out that churches got done with paintbrushes and paint, just like houses, and in our rural area, everyone painted their own house.
She felt bad, took the hint, and called every couple the priest had on his schedule.
Over 80 volunteers removed the pews, refinished the woodwork, painted it in and out, refinished the floors, sanded and painted all the pews.  I think it was between 50 and 100 dollars that each couple agreed to kick in, but they got so many donations they used the excess for aisle carpets, and light fixtures.
Still a simple country church, but what a difference.
It has been 5 years, & I live near there now, and get invited to assorted baptisms etc.  Now people from the city parish come there for weddings, and the local  parish has more than doubled.  It is good to see people treat their church as though it is their own, not the responsibility of a distant archdiocese.
Last time I was there it had 2 stained glass windows, made by parishioners who are craftsmen.

Power to the brides!

We went to church today, at the church. We went that one time, and then was going to go back, but no one was there. I drove by the other day and they had a sign about services this sunday.

They had locked the doors to re-do the chruch. It is awesome!! It's kind of small, but they put in red carpet, repainted all the wall, re stained the pews, put new glass in the lights. The inside top ceiling area is all wood now. It's very nice. It is now our church and they have talked me into joining the choir. They seem to be very understanding about our jobs. My mom hasn't been to that church in years. Guess who's going with me next week? Wink
