I have just started planning my wedding and I'm totally confused about how to pick the colors for everything. I understand that the bridesmaids dresses and the groomsmen are suppose to match somehow. But how do the colors in the ceremony tie into the reception? Is the reception colors suppose to match the colors of the bridesmaid also? And if I have color on my cake is that suppose to match also? Please help this color thing is giving me a major headache!!

lol  First of all breathe.  One of the easiest way to choose colors for your overall wedding is to think about what are your and your FH's favorite colors?  Or do you guys each have a favorite flower?  Do you have a specific theme to the wedding that you want to tie in?  All of those things you can pull color choices from.  You'll want to select a main color and then 1-3 accent colors.  For instance, my DH and I knew we wanted daisies incorporated in our wedding.  I ADORE the color yellow so we chose a pastel yellow and a pastel lilac to accent.  We tied those colors together throughout the entire day.  The BMs were dressed in pastel yellow dresses, the GM wore lilac vests, the flowers were mostly daisies with a few yellow roses and the same flowers were used at the reception.  Our cake had little touches of yellow and lilac on it though it was mostly white.

As for your question as far as ceremony vs. reception, yes-the colors are usually the same at both.  I mean it wouldn't make much sense to have red and white at the ceremony and only blue and black at the reception, right? ;)

The sky's the limit as far as what colors you should choose.  Once you do choose them, everything will fall right into place.  And don't freak out if you can't match everything exactly.  For our meal, we couldn't find lilac colored linen napkins.  We had to go with a dark purple.  No biggie. It was still close and it actually added a little extra.

I chose my colors based off my flower I wanted the most which was sunflowers. So the bm's dresses are clover green so the flowers will pop, the groomsmens are wearing green too, and my FH a canary yellow. The flower girls are in white with yellow sashes tied around the middle. The same colors are used at the reception too.
Also keep in mind the time of year you are getting married. My friend likes hot pink and lime green, which I said would not work with late August. That feels more like June to me. If you are getting married in the winter, silver, gold, or other darker colors like wine would be good.

Something will come to you. It was also easy to me because I really like green and yellow. So if you have favorite colors you can use them. Or pick a general color palate and play off that. My friend was in a wedding one where there was a rainbow of colors. She told her girls to chose a dress, the only requirement being that no one was allowed the same color.

In todays world you can do just about whatever you want. Gone are the days where you are required to be matchy matchy. Another option is to pick a color, like yellow, and then everyone can wear varying shades of that color.

I hope I didn't confuse you anymore than you already are. I know it is daunting. Maybe when you find a dress you like for the bms then you will get an idea.Start looking around at dresses if that helps you. My FSIL had no idea what she wanted until she saw the dress she liked and thought the color it was in was perfect.
Good Luck!

Yes, don't stress so much.   :)

As we were planning our wedding, everyone kept asking me what our colors were. Initially, I wasn't even going to have a set color scheme, since I dislike matchy-matchy stuff intensely. Then, though, we found a picture of a wedding cake with pale pink and sage green decorations, loved it, and bang...those became our wedding colors. As Happy said, everything wasn't EXACTLY those colors, but the general feel of the flowers, bridal party attire, etc. reflected them.

Good luck!

I agree with all the comments above.  Just relax, don't feel pressured by what you should do and how you should do it.  If you're having a difficult time chosing, maybe turn to your venue for inspiration and color ideas.  It's your special day and no matter what it will all turn out beautifully.

The rule now is ANything Goes.:)

All the guys need are black tuxes. Black tuxes are timeless, sharp and classy and they go with any color dress.

You could even have the GM pick out any black tux of their choice -- this is the same as letting the ladies pick any dress in any style, but in one main color.:)

You need not go matchy matchy.

Stick with white tablecloths for the reception. I'm not crazy about colored tablecloths, especialy if you have a dark color cloth: it also tends to darken the entire room.

Anything on the cake you wish -- plain white, or multicolored flowers or some type of chocolate/fondant doohickey with your new last initial on it.:)

J said he didn't care what the colors were, as long as his favorite was included. His fave is black, and that goes with anything. So we just put our favorites together, black, pink and green.

After I finally talk to my (choice for) MOH, I'm going to give her the choice of those three colors, in almost any style. (Haven't decided on that yet.)

Go to the bridal stores and start looking at the BM dresses, but JUST for color.  The little swatches tehy sell you are all well and good, but they don't give you an accurate portrait of what the full color will give off.  for instance I love a color named congac.  It was a deep burnt orange and I thought it would be beautiful for my fall wedding.  Then I saw the color on a dress and thought OMG! That will make anyone look like a pumpkin!  An easy idea is to stick with a neutral colored dress (such as black, brown, tan) and accent with sashes and such.  This way, the girls can possibly wear their dresses again and you're not looking back at your wedding pictures saying "why in the world did I pick pool blue for all 5 on my bridesmaids to wear!?"  If this doesn't help, I do apologize, I have very odd views about things at times.

I got over the whole "color thing" quickly when I read some of these posts. I had envisioned a pool blue and white. But reality set in with the choice of flowers, etc. Since we are doing a "beach theme" reception I decided to throw that over into the ceremony and now we have an ocean of blue shades as well as color from tropicals like orchids. It is coming together nicely and there will be lots of sand and shells to blend in even more colors. We are turning hot humid Alabama into our own tropical paradise for the weekend!

Congrats, Lex! I agree with everyone. Relax! You can use a color scheme or not. I've been to weddings that had a definite scheme, and others that didn't pay much attention to any color. My own brother supposedly had a dusty pink, but the bridesmaid was peach and I can't even remember anything really pink, other than the paper plates and napkins at the luncheon! It was still a beautiful wedding.
You might want to browse pictures of other people's weddings. It helps to get a visual of what the colors you like actually look like when used for different things. At first, I wanted sage green, but then I realized I didn't like the pictures of bridesmaids in green on a green lawn with green trees in the background... so we decided on chocolate brown and burgandy.
I enjoy color coordinating, so we're incorporating our colors into a lot of little things at our wedding. My bridesmaid's dress is brown, and the men in the wedding party will have some brown and red splashes on their grayish-black ties. There will be brown berries in the bouquets and the groom's boutinerre, and red spray roses in the corsages. Our invitations have a brown silouette of a flower with burgandy lettering and brown envelopes. We have burgandy cocktail napkins and brown linen napkins. We're using red apples in mason jars as centerpieces, and our favors are paper woven heart baskets made of red and tan papers (a little off from our actual colors, but the designs on the paper were more important to me there!). So you can do as much or as little as you want. Have fun!

I totally agree; pick a palatte from something; like a picture you like or a set of flowers or some such thing.  Color coordinating doesn't have to be hard, in fact it should be fun!  Vibrant colors may be what you are looking for, but it's always good to see how they go together.  Earth tones are much easier to match up than a lot of very saturated colors.  It may not be the most obvious choice at first, but if you truly run into a wall, go with your guy/initial reaction.  You won't regret it.
