So I am dog sitting for a very senile, geriatric dog.  On top of all that goes with senility, he has food issues.  I think he forgets that I've fed him.  He is currently standing at his food bowl barking.  Then he walks in here looks at me for a minute.  I pet him.  Then he goes back to his food bowl and barks.  He likes to do this periodically throughout the night which makes sleeping a problem.

AND he is having continence issues.  He peed on the floor inside the house as I was unlocking the door to let him out.  We were standing right at the door!

This poor dog.  I've been dog sitting him for many years and he was very well house trained.

I feel sorry for him. I think it might be time to think about doggy heaven.

Poor doggus.

Try tethering him to you -- get his leash and tie it to your belt with a scarf. This way, if he  starts to circle, or starts to pee (or poops)you can catch  him in the act and take him outside where he can complete the job.:)

You'll have to treat him the same way you'd treat a puppy -- take him outsise several times a day so he can pee outside.

If he slept next to your bed it would help. He'd probably have a good night's sleep that way.

His bed is on the floor next to the bed I'm sleeping in so that helps.

He was a good boy today and I can't find an pp on the floor.  I even walked around barefoot so I'd feel if it was dried a little and sticky.

I was gone from 11am to 8:30pm!

Hopefully he'll let me sleep tonight.  I have to work in the morning.

Maybe he was having a bad day yesterday. Poor boy, like I said.

He's an old dog.  These things happen.  It will happen to you when you get old too.

Yes, it's generally a sign that he's headed to doggy heaven.  At least it was w/ my dog.  He would get so embarassed when he peed on the floor - cowering and whining in the corner.  It's not like he intended to do it though.  Just increase the number of times you take him outside. Hopefully that will do the trick.

Yea my FIL's had a dog and she was doing the kind of stuff. She would go into a room and stare at the wall and shake. It was so sad. The vet said when dogs get old sometimes their gums turn a light pink color rather then there dark color. He said it was a sign they need to be put down. I'm not sure what it means exactly but its all so sad!

Omg does anyone watch the office?
This is a little off subject but not to much when Dewight kills Angelas cat and she said you don't go to cat heaven if they are youthenized! lol

I know people don't like it when grammar or spelling is corrected, but I can help it on this one:

It's euthanized, not youthanized.

Animals' gums turn pale when they are malnourished (I was told this by a vet).  Older animals often don't eat well b/c of bad teeth or just b/c they are nearing the end and they instinctively know this.  So their gums will fade.

This is one of the reasons why vets always check their gums during an exam.

I am updating my post with a sad note.  Shipley has gone to doggy heaven.  They took him to the vet and he had bladder cancer.  They gave him some drugs to keep him comfortable and it was sort of a miracle drug.  He went back to his personality but then he quit eating and drinking so his doggy parents decided to have him put to sleep.

He was a rescue dog they got when they lived in Houston.  He was found hanging around outside a Shipley doughnuts so he was named Shipley.

That's so sad. We've lost a couple of pets over the years, and with the one I had growing up, I cried for the whole day and was a complete mess. Even though I knew it was coming, he was a 13 year old German Shepherd.

Sending happy thoughts your way. Pass them on to your friend.

That's so sad, but I'm glad he's not suffering anymore.  Losing a dog is  awful!  I have two, and I don't want to think of not having them around at any point.  They're my life.  They keep me sane when I'm stressed.  There's nothing like a happy dog to greet you after a long/bad day.

Rescue dogs are the best.  I adopted my girl, she and her brother were found laying next their her mother, she had been hit by a car.  My boy literally just showed up one day.  Leila was in the back yard and all of a sudden there's two dogs back there. They even look alike, its weird.  We put up posters and checked him for a microchip.  No one called and we were relieved.

I think rescue dogs know they're getting the good life and appreciate their parents even more then non-rescue dogs.  All dogs and cats love us unconditionally.

I hate to think what will happen when Robert the cat uses his last life.  He is my husbands baby and he's also almost 20 but he's got a lotta life in him so I'm hoping he'll be around a few more years.

Shipper was a good boy.  They asked everyone to send them a funny Shipley story.

:(

I am sorry about your friends' dog. It's always rough to lose a pet family member.

(There was a pibble mix that was abandoned near a diner; they named him King George, after the diner)
