Ariel and Laurie, those are really cute! I am sad I didn't dress up. I was hoping  to have at least a few kids come to the door - didn't happen. We live in the country, in a part where everyone has at least 2 acres, most more, so I expected not that many. I thought at least we would get a couple kids from the street we lived on before they went into town. Nope.

We went to our friends after they got home from trick-or-treating with their kids. The little one was so cute! Her mother made her costume, and she was a chicken. This girl is not quite 2, and she took a white onesie, sewed padding around it, and wrapped it with a white feather boa for the feathers. Then for the feet, she took yellow rubber gloves and put them around her shoes, so when she walked she was clomping all over. And then for the head, she had...it looked like a skul cap almost, but with ties for the chin, and made a big red thingy for it. I told her to save it...I am so using it in two years!

I love the holiday season.

Love the costume, Ariel.  And I am still gloating about the weather, even if it is still overcast. I cannot believe how warm it is down here. By November, I'm usually in fleece and wool 100% of the time.  I was running around the house in shorts and a T shirt the other day.  I am living in short sleeves, but I see people down here in parkas and I want to just melt!  Crazy!

The job search recommences this week, as we now have cable, internet access and most of our stuff put away.  We just need to put a few items away and hang stuff up.  :-)  Yay!  I have high hopes that a local address and phone number will induce people to call.  I think the Maine address and Boston cell phone number may have thrown people for a loop.  lol.

Can I just say, Kraid, that the article you posted was beyond scary. I am a registered Republican and a Catholic and I was horrified that that bill made it as far as it did.  Are we going to post all medical procedures or just ones that are undergone by women?  Should we post the names and photos of men who undergo vasectomies for birth control purposes, or post info about men who need the little blue pill to get it up?  Those also involve reproductive issues, so if we are concerned about medical procedures that affect one's ability to procreate, let's post equally for men and women.  Abortion is a medical procedure, and the only people who need to have ANY input in whether it's performed are the woman and her doctor.  No one else.  Not the father and certainly not the public.  Unless it is your body, you have ZERO say over what happens in it or to it.

/Climbs down off soapbox...

We had a ton of kids on Halloween, we actually ran out of candy!

The most original costume I saw all night was a girl dressed up as a stop light and the lights on her costume flashed on and off.  Pretty creative.

You are lucky, Amanda. We had zero trick or treaters. We stayed home Sat night too so we could hand out candy!!  Argh.  Well, at least we got M&Ms, so it won't be too painful to dispose of the candy.  lol.  :-)

Thanks everyone! I was impressed with myself, because I never come up with anything clever and/or topical. Plus, I really needed to buy an apron anyway -- baking season is upon us and I get way too much flour all over my clothing.

Glad to see you back, ALF. The difference in people's perspectives on the climates amuses me, too. My brother is stationed in North Carolina and last winter he called when they got their first "snow" (barely a dusting) because he found it hilarious that some of the other guys were completely freaking out about driving in it. They'd never seen snow before.

It was warm here on Saturday, but insanely windy. I ended up sitting outside on the front steps for trick-or-treaters and chatted with the neighbors. Usually, there are hardly any kids, but this year we got maybe 25? Either the good weather was an incentive or the neighborhood is shifting towards more kid-friendly. Still have plenty of leftover candy, though. Anything still around in a couple of months will get put to good use on a gingerbread house though.

Yeah Ariel, you look so cute. You did a really good job. It helps that you have naturally dark hair too.

I probably told like 10 different people about your costume. I just love that lady - Flo. She cracks me up.

Isn't it just absolutley crazy how some people freak outi n snow? It's funny, a friend of mine had moved to NC for awhile, and said if they get an inch, the whole town shuts down. Like all the stores are closed. I just laugh. Try getting 12 inches and driving down a dirt road that has not been plowed b/c you have to go to work.

Even though I get they're not used to it, I still laugh. yeah, I've got a bit of a mean streak in me.

Thanks. The dark hair and ability to pull off a lot of makeup were definitely useful.

I guess we're all freaked out by what we're not used to. Like I can't even imagine living somewhere at high (or even moderate) risk of tornados or earthquakes. No thanks. I'll take the blizzards and occasional hurricane any time. At least we usually get decent warnings that a storm is coming.

You're right.  We do become accustomed to our own weather.  We get snow in St. Louis but it never accumulates.  It snows, melts and then we have another snow.

When people from Chicago, or I had a boss who had moved from Rochester, NY are here and we have school closings because we have a few inches of snow on the ground they laugh at us.

My dad and a buddy of his (who's a carpenter who owes pop money) are building me a ramp for my house today.

Soon I will be able to move around my house again. Very excited.

     That is great!

Are even a few steps too many, or are you using a wc much of the time now?   Older homes usually make it a design challenge to put in ramps for full staircase (whole floor) replacements.  Good that you have a dedicated crew.

yay 30 more minutes!!! Then I get to go home!

Kraid, that wonderful! I don't know your exact situation, but that must be very frustrating not to be able to get around your own house. Glad it's getting taken care of!

I have a rolling walker. You know, the kind with hand brakes and a seat. I can do stairs, but then I can't take the walker from car to house. Currently I get around by holding onto ledges, knobs and furniture, so it'll be nice to have my wheels.

Indeed. I hope they do a good job, Kraid - and before the snow sets in, too.

So I have a theory that, as a general guideline, not only the posters who don't change their usernames from the numbers, but also those that define themselves solely by their future husbands and/or their status as brides, are much less rational that those who have a unique identity. Obviously, there are plenty of crazies with unique names and a few bride-y names that are perfectly reasonable (for confidentiality's sake perhaps). But the overall trend seems to hold. I wonder if it's somehow reflective of their personalities that they choose a username that indicates they identify themselves according to their significant other and/or their status as a bride, rather than as independent individuals.

If that makes any sense. The whole daylight saving time ending thing has me a little kooky -- I'm like a bear. I want to hibernate in winter. When it's dark, I want to sleep... so now I want to sleep at 5pm. I get REALLY nutty when the days are so short that I don't see any daylight at all, because I get to work when it's dark, no windows at work, and then it's dark when I leave.

You're dead to me Maine. DEAD TO ME.

I hope everyone who voted yes on 1 gets trapped in a miserable marriage they can't escape.

Black-hearted theocrats all of them.

Kraid, I'm confused. Who ticked you off?

Ughh...I was enjoying the fact that the thought of fast food made me want to gag. Here's to eating healthy without trying!

Until last Friday. I saw an advertisment for BK's double cheesburger, and I swear, it was the best tasting cheesburger I have ever had.

So now I'm cheesburger crazy and I just ate pizza for lunch. I'm sure in a week or so it will change (I hope) but for now all I want is grease. And chocolate.

Sigh.

Maine voted to repeal their law allowing gay marriage.

I'm not pregnant, but I get the must.have.cheeseburger cravings every so often, too. I'll keep the BK double cheeseburger in mind -- I got invited to a Twilight party in a couple of weeks (laugh if you must) and the event starts with a trip to BK, I guess because they're doing a Twilight promotion? I don't know. But now I know what to get. :-)

Just tell yourself that iron (meat) and calcium (cheese) and lycopene (tomato sauce/ketchup) are all good things.

My pleasure!

The way I figure, all junk food is not created equal. There's true junk food that has absolutely no nutritional value (I'm looking at you, Cheetos!). Then there's stuff like pizza, burgers, chips&salsa that may not be the healthiest choices, but do have good things in there, too. So as long as you practice moderation (not eating an entire pizza or three Big Macs at every meal) and try to eat a balanced diet most of the time, you'll be okay.

One more thing, the greatness of my BK double chsburger may have partly been due to raging hormones, and the excitement that I had an appetite after 3pm.

It was darn good though. Just if you don't have a holy expierence like I did, your hormones aren't  raging enough. LOL

I'm angry to see the law permitting same sex marriage dismantled, too.  A simple plurality, majority rules, is fine when you are talking how much to charge for car registration.  When it comes to a major group deciding to deny civil rights to a minority, the legislature was wise to originally pass the law, not putting it to popular vote.

The only heartening thing - that 46 or 47 % of the voters  DID support same sex marriage, which directly affects under 20% of the population, is a higher support for a minority cause  than has every been shown there before.  Change will come, next time.

Looks like they've gotten the sorting issue fixed.

Anyway, as I just peeked at the calendar and realized we're less than two months from Christmas, I need to get on the ball - and thought I would share my project with y'all.

I always end up needing lots of hostess gifts around the holidays and, while a bottle of wine and a tin of cookies are generally appreciated, some of my relatives won't put either to good use. Instead, a few years back, I started buying amaryllis bulbs, growing them, and using foil wrapping over the plastic pots - they're bright, colorful, and really inexpensive if you buy the bulbs now (I spent ~$5 each).

Just throwing the suggestion out there. Flowering time is 7-10 weeks, so this weekend will be my planting time. Sometimes they come faster, sometimes slower, so I buy a few more than I need and figure the worst that happens is I have extra flowers around before and/or after the holidays.

Misma, Ronald Reagan said that ketchup is a vegetable, so that's really good for the baby!

That is the only advantage of working where I do, near Boston Garden, there are several sports pubs that make a darn good cheeseburger.

But I had lunch with Aunt Thelma today and we had beef stew.  Yum on such a blustery cold day!

After all these years of knowing each other on line, it is really weird to get together in person!  But awesome!

Kraid, when is your next Broons game?  We need to meet at The Fours.

Tonight, baby, tonight.

Will be there around 5:30ish. And by there, I mean the lame-o bar inside N. Station having my pre-game bottle of Bud (my beer choice as of late.)

Thomas jersey, green walker, frizzy brown hair - if you see me, say hi!

So can I just say that I was looking for another pregnancy board to join and the bump reminds me so much of the Knot (I know it's part of the same thing).

I seriously can't believe how snotty people are sometimes. Maybe I will post there, but so much of the stuff seems so petty. Talk about attacking people and...it just felt like a big gossip club. Like there was no sensible middle of the road people on there. No one with a level head. At least not when you are talking about the regular or semi regular posters (based on the number of posts).

Like completly attacking the girls who smoked. I know it's bad (which is why I quit on Labor Day) but saying things like ewww...I wouldn't want you touching my baby. And (in a completly different thread) that girl smokes get out of here and go light up another one.

Not talking specifically about the health risks, or giving ways to quit, but just chastising people. That kind of behavior irritates me.
