OK sorry about that little Bump rant from yesterday. There are some good threads on there, but really, a lot of the stuff I was reading just made me mad and I had to vent. It felt like parts of it were being controlled by a group of bullies.

And I sound a little crazy, I know. Not like I actually know anyone or really care about them. :-)

You're more than welcome to rant here any time you like.

It's funny - if weddings tend to amplify the worst in people, pregnancy and babies bring out a whole new level of crazy. You would think that, if the goal is to do what people have been doing for millenia -- bring a new life into the world that will grow up healthy and happy -- it should just be joy all around. But instead it seems to turn into a massive judgement-fest. No matter what you say or do, someone else out there thinks you're crazy for it - and I don't think any topic is safe.

Go with your gut and do what's right for you. Unless it's grossly negligent (which you wouldn't be!), your child will be f-i-n-e fine. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.

P.S. Well done on quitting smoking. It's an incredibly difficult habit to break, but you'll be glad you did. Being around to see your kids grow up is priceless and quitting early increases your odds of that greatly. (I'm not trying to be judgemental at all -- just touching a personal chord, as an extended family member was very recently diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer with metastases and it's heartbreaking to think that he probably won't live to walk any of his three daughters down the aisle someday.)

Ariel, that's not judgemental. The posts I was reading yesterday were. See, when you explain something like that, how you did, I don't have a problem with that. I DO however have a problem with "ewww...I wouldn't let you touch my baby. That's so gross."

It's just the drama is kinda funny, but irritated me for some reason. There is this girl that a lot of the regulars obviously don't like for some reason, and she created a post. Granted, I don't know why exactly they don't like her, but the post was entitled "cravings". Or what cravings are you having or whatever. The first reply was "you to leave here." And it went on and on, some people responding politely to the post, and others going off on this girl.

Like I said, I don't know WHY they don't like her, but the thread itself wasn't bad. And then there was a couple people who tried to stick up for her, and the one, who had admitted smoking on another thread (who was one of those who tried to stick up for her) was told something like "since you smoke, why don't you just leave and go light up another one."

It's just that I was seeing that same attitude with a lot of the obvious regulars. That's not constructive, or polite, or even snarky. Just downright rude.

That's just vicious.

I've never really understood the hard-core mean girls thing. It always seemed like way too much work to me, which is why I think it's kinda funny when randoms on here accuse me of being a mean girl. I don't think I'm ever cruel or deliberately malicious, but I might be blunt or a little snarky at times.

I went to co-ed schools, but had friends who went to an all-boys Catholic school who, in turn, had friends who went to one of the all-girls Catholic schools. Man, some of those girls were awful - horrible - to my best friend and me because (clearly) going to a public school meant we were trashy. They would say things like what you're describing. We would just laugh at them, because we couldn't figure out who they were trying to impress (the boys all saw right through it). I guess some people out there never grow out of that behavior.

I did the COP adopt a family this year and man is it hard to find a doll nowadays that isn't a baby doll or Barbie.

I picked out a 4 year old who wanted a doll.  I didn't want to do a baby doll, but I felt a 4 year old is a little young for Barbie.

What a nightmare.  Thank God I found a Cabbage Patch Doll!

Am I just that out of touch with toy trends?  Not every girl wants a baby doll.  You can't really hug Barbie.

What happened to all the in-betweens?

There was one doll that was like an American Girls Doll.  Not really a 4 year old doll either.  She was more of a 8-9 year old doll for a kid who would be able to take care of her properly.

It was more of a display doll than a play with and get dirty in the back yard doll.

The plus side though is I found a baby doll that moves and makes noises for $15.  I am going to get that to practice with the dogs.

The training we've read about recommends getting a baby doll and doing with it everything you would do with a real live baby in order to get your dogs conditioned to you paying attention to the baby.

DH wanted one that makes noises too, so there we are.

DH then goes "So I cannot use the doll to play tug of war right?" Then he wondered why I didn't find that very funny.

Boys. Honestly!

It's just plain beautiful outside right now - 70 degrees, sunny - and I'm trapped inside on a conference call.

Boo.

I'm such a dork, but I love all those cutsy christmas movies that start coming out now on tv. I can't remember which channel, but there is one on tomorrow night that looks cute.

And one of my favorites is the Santa Clause with Tim Allen. I like the first and second one from that series, but the third one I thought they were trying a bit too hard. Seemed...cheesy, not cute.

Anyway, I love the holidays. I'm already thinking about buying christmas presents and decorating the house. (Only thinking, not actually DOING like some places I've seen.)

And of course, it is like 67* outside today, which is nuts, b/c it was barely that on my wedding day on Aug 22nd! LOL. I just can't believe it's the middle of November already.

This has been the kookiest weather year. They were showing highlights from all of the Patriots games so far this year during Sunday's game and it's just insane that the field was covered in SNOW three weeks ago.

I'm not sure I want to admit this, but I've already purchased a bunch of my Christmas gifts. And my cards. And wrapping paper. And seriously considered (had it not been gorgeous weather yesterday, too) starting my gift wrapping over the weekend, but hiding the wrapped gifts away. (I have an unnatural love for gift-wrapping.)

But none of the decorations will see the light of day until the day after Thanksgiving. That's my tradition. Thanksgiving Day is usually exhausting -- football game in the morning, lots of driving to see family, and - of course - overeating. So I love spending the next day in sweats, digging out decorations, and getting into the holiday season. But I refuse to do so before then.

I love Santa Claus The Movie.  I have Garfield's Christmas on DVD.  Then ABCfamily had Mickey's Christmas Carol on last year, I hope they do this year.  It's been a really long time since I got to see it and it's really hard to find on video or DVD.

DH hated Santa Claus the Movie. I think he is an alien from another planet.

Amanda, I searched for it and found it on Amazon.com. I have used that site in the past when I have wanted to find something that I cannot locate in normal stores.

Anyway, they have it for 14.99!

I usually have Nightmare Before Christmas in the DVD rotation from mid-October through Christmas, but my copy has currently grown legs (or so claims my brother, who claims it magically turned up in his bags after his last visit home on leave, along with many of my other movies).

I liked the Santa Clause. The other ones that always make the rotation (some traditional, some not-so-much): Charlie Brown Christmas, The Grinch (original), The Grinch who Stole Christmas (Jim Carrey), Home Alone, Gremlins, Elf, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer... I'll have to look at my DVD collection, I know I'm missing good ones!

I love how there's a different movie on every night on ABC Family. It makes me happy. :-)

That might have been the channel I was thinking of. There is one with a cute Santa on tomorrow night. DH will just have to deal with the fact that it's my turn for the tv and  his syfy and chiller movies will have to wait their turn again. :-)

Marriage is all about compromise!

I have really strong attachments to certain movies on holidays. Like Halloween doesn't feel right unless I've watched Psycho (the original 1960 version - not any of that remake nonsense). But it's not like I plan to watch them. I usually forget about it until a few days before and then I'm struck with a sudden "must watch that" urge.

Or "must listen to that". It may just be a Massachusetts thing, but Thanksgiving is not Thanksgiving without listening to "Alice's Restaurant" on the radio. It's as important as the turkey, for goodness sake!

Oh, and I have to hear "I want a hippopotumus (SP) for christmas."

DH has never heard it, but I wouldn't stop singing it last year. Drove him crazy. Now he doesn't want to hear it, b/c he is convinced it is really annoying, not funny.

It's hard to explain the appeal, but it's a Vietnam war protest song by Arlo Guthrie from the 1960's that is played on several radio stations in MA every Thanksgiving: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice's_Restaurant

It's almost 20 minutes long and it's always played at noon (though usually several more times during the day). It's not really a song, as much as a spoken monologue with music in the background, detailing a long story of a Thanksgiving Day when a couple of guys offered to do someone a favor and bring trash to the dump, but they couldn't get in and ended up getting arrested and it was the biggest crime story in the town. Then they get drafted and end up on the criminals' bench because of their littering.

Told you it was hard to explain.

Oh. My. God.  Misma! I can't STAND the song I Want A Hippopotamus for Christmas.  I ALWAYS end up hearing it at least 10 times before the holiday. DH has never heard it.

Now that annoying kid's voice singing about hippotami is in my head!  Argh!  lol.

LMAO. You sound like my DH. And he has only heard the Marlene version of it. I love it. It makes me crack up. I get a 1950's picture of a plump, blond haired, spoiled little girl singing this.

Anyway, if you want a good tear jerker movie (just heard the song that goes along with this so it's in my head), watch the Christmas Shoes (there's a sequel too) with Kimberly Williams-Paisley. GREAT movie, but I bawled my eyes out. DH got them for me last Christmas.

Yay I get to get out of this sauna and GO HOME. (Thermostats reading 80.) Have a good night ladies!

I hate that song too, Amanda.

I love Christmas songs in general.  My favorite holiday CD is Christmas w/ the Rat Pack.  I can't bring it out till after  Thanksgiving. It just feels too early.

I hate, HATE, that Paul McCartney Christmas song. That comes on and I change the channel, leave the store or will myself deaf.

My favorites are the Bing Crosby ones. Can't go wrong with the classics.

In other news, I annoyed  a poster on another board so much, she searched for and posted my personal info on the board. You mention fellatio, and everyone goes nuts.

It's a gift, I guess.

Kraid, a person of as many talents as you have names.

Love Alice's Restaurant Massacree.

Of course you have to sing along, then do a full rendition of Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road  and the Fish Cheer  when you are done.  My parents' era stuff, we grew up with it.

I was 4 and just learning English, but fully versed in American folk songs, protest stuff, and anything fun,   when I greatly upset the little old lady in the library.  I tried  telling her the air in the children's room by the fireplace was bad.  She could barely understand me, kept asking about what fire?    So  borrowing a line from Arlo Guthrie's  Dead Skunk, I sung out loud and clear - and it's stinkin' to high heaven.   That, she understood.       Dead animal stuck in the chimney.
Music, like smells, brings back such strong clear memories.

You're missing a treat.

Lots of rock radio stations trditionally play "AR" at noon on Thanksgiving Day.

YOu can hear the song on You Tube, I'll bet. Enjoy!

And for everyone else, sing it when it comes around on the guitar...all togehter now...

you can get anything you want
At Alice's Restaurant
(exceptin' Alice!)
You Can get anything you want
At Alice's Restaurant
Walk right in go around the back
Just a half a mile from the railroad trax
You can get anything you want
At Alice's Restaurant!

I am drawing a full length panel cartoon as an extra credit project for my bio class.

I thought I'd give it a try to keep up with my cartooning.

Actually, I was being sarcastic. The little girl sings it that way in the song. The first time I think it's musses, and the second mussessess or whatever. I was just being cute.

I don't really know what it is for real, as I haven't run into one in person either. I certainly don't want one for Christmas. I have too much to take care of as it is. lol
