Weddings have always been to impress people.  Back when royals married it was to show how much more wealthy and sophiscated your country was to the incoming forgieners.

However it has always been to impress the GUESTS.

Now it has become how well can the guests bow down to the bride and lavish her with presents and do her bidding.

I admit I am excited about getting dressed up. I don't dress very fancy usually and it will be fun to play dress up for a day. But what fun is it if my friends and family don't have a good time? When we started planning, the one thing I said was that I wanted a wedding where everyone could enjoy themselves and not have it be too stuffy. We are having it outdoors at a club we belong to and it will be very relaxed. I am having children come because there is a sandbox and that way people won't have to worry about hiring a babysitter (I know a lot of couples right now who don't go out for that reason). There are some things I do want to do "my" way, but nothing that is going to cause a family fued or make anyone feel uncomfortable. I guess I never realized what weddings have become. And honestly, reading some of the stuff has helped me put a reality check on some things for myself. Not that I am overbearing or pushy, but it is easy to see how easy it is to become that way. While it is funny to watch things like Bridezilla or page through most wedding magazines (although I did find one that I liked) I think the media and culture today breeds this type of behavior. Thankfully, there are enough people on here who are not afraid to tell it like it is and give everyone a reality check.

I knew I could not please everyone, MIL being top among them and I was not going to do things HER way just b/c she thought that was how it shoudl be done.

But my wedding would have been pretty lame if all I was doing was booting people out b/c they gained weight, got PG, had a wedding close to  mine, didn't dress the way I thought they should dress, didn't bring me the right gift.

It makes you wonder what some of these posters are like in real life.  Cause I have a hard time understanding why someone would marry them, unless the FH is just as crazy.

Amanda, I wonder that w/ alot of these posts.  How did they find someone insane enough to date them, never mind marry them.  Do they really micromanage their friends'/families' lives this much on a daily basis or do they go plum crazy once someone asks them to marry them?  I will admit that I am Miss Super Type A/Must Make Lists when it comes to work, but I was Miss Laid Back/Everyone Will Have Fun when planning the wedding. My MOH and best friend openly admitted that she was astonished that I didn't have a single meltdown when planning the wedding. I mean, I was ready a good 45 minutes early and was 30 minutes early to my own NOON wedding [the limo guy drove us around for a while to kill time; he said I was the first bride that he drove who was ever ready early].  The only thing I stressed out about was making sure that everything was planned and vendors were secured on time, but the only person I stressed out about that was me [and I was done planning at least 5 months before the wedding; and we had an 11 month engagement.  lol]. I don't know.  Maybe I'm just freakin' awesome.  :-)

I totally flew by the seat of my pants.  Drove my MIL insane b/c she would call and be like "did you hire the caterer yet?"  NOPE.   lol.

I can't imagine the stress of trying to micromanage my family and friends like some of these brides.

To me you are really petty if your ENTIRE wedding is ruined cause someone wore jeans to your wedding or a cell phone rang or a baby chirpped.

Maybe it is just b/c of all the drama that happened before the wedding, I was just damn glad to make ti down the aisle nad marry my husband. I didn't give two figs about the rest of it.1

Someone could have shown up in a gorilla costume and I would not have cared (though I would wonder about it. lol).

Clearly you are freakin' awesome -- or at least control the weather. I saw your post in the other thread, but it seemed to have gotten un-hijacked. Hope the weather clears up for the Sox game -- I'm jealous! I can't remember the last time the Braves played here.

As far as the wedding drama, I chalk a lot of it up to theknot and, frankly, the rampant consumerism gone amok that has taken over. The first one in that bridesmaid venting thread was talking about how ticked she was that one of her 'maids was crying recession, as though it was a make-believe excuse. My job is 99.9% secure, but I'm still budgeting like crazy. It would be beyond stupid not to.

I went to a wedding in the past year that I won't give details on, but it was just an awful display of ME ME ME with very little consideration given to the guests. I was almost embarrassed for them, but still put on a smiling face and made the most of it, because that's what a good guest does.

So it goes. My biggest concern today is that I have NO IDEA what to get my dad for Father's Day. Grumble.

I just think a lot of young girls in high school watch these platinum wedding shows, and expect that's what she's entitled to, whether she can afford it or not.

Like they want to top what they see on tv. It's sad, because weddings aren't about the marriage anymore. It's how much money you can spend. Makes someone like me feel almost sh*tty cuz we can't afford some lavish event, because it's what is being expected of us.

It's 90 outside already. My gramma called me from Oregon earlier to brag about her 65-degree weather up there lol

It's nothing but consumerism out here in NJ when it's time for a wedding.

And it's worse than keeping up with the Joneses.

Everything is $150 a plate and up -- and if you get invited to one of these weddings, you are more or less expected to give about $200 as a gift, if you come with a guest.

It's also no longer about going to your parish house of worship, because that's where you have always gone to worhship: everybody wants the Basilica in Newark -- it was a thousand to get married there and that was back in 2002. I can only imagine how much they are charging now for the use of that church.

What else kills me: the beebees that want a pretty church to get married in. Churches are houses of worship; they are not stage sets or photo ops as a background for your pwincess day.

My eyelid is swollen half shut. So much for over the counter allergy medicine.

I look like I got punched in the eyes.

What's the point in starting another vent for bridesmaids thread? Isn't one enough?

I pink puffy heart Tar-Jay!

The big place to register here used to be Fortunoff -- but that's gone Chapter 11. They had so many nice things in there.

I bought a chiming domed "grandfather clock" in Fortunoff about 9 years ago. I positively love that thing.:)

LMAO!  Thanks. I'm glad someone else agrees w/ me. :-)

The weather did clear up, although it was so damp/humid that my hair looked like a chia pet by the time we walked across the river. lol.  The game was great.  Swing dancing was a blast too.  DH was sad he didn't get another week of vacation.  It's his own fault that he didn't take it off.  I guess we'll take some more time in August.  :-)

Re: humidity hair -- That is what baseball caps are for!

I had to use iodine antiseptic on one of my feet, so now I have one Oompa-Loompa foot. I'm seriously considering soaking both of them so they'll match, even though the other foot doesn't need it.

It's still raining down here -- I went to the supermarket yesterday and by the time I came out, the sky opened up and there was a hellacious rainstorm for about 10 minutes.

Lucky me -- I got drenched running to my car and drenched more when I went to get in it after I loaded up on the groceries.

When is this mess gonna stop? It's also too cool, only about 70 degrees.

Probably allergies or you are really dried out.  If I get too dried out my throat gets really scratchy.

Last July I got a viral infection where I had a sore throat and nothing else - thought it was strep throat because there was a bump on it - and it lasted three weeks. The bad part was the there was nothing they could give me for it.

Hope it gets better! It sucks being sick in the summertime. I think sore throats should be for the winter only.

Everyone out there with warm, sunny weather can send it on over to New England, as we've missed the memo that it's officially summer.

They said no warm days here until at least the start of July.

Mebbe the other theorists are right: this is not global warming; it's a pole shift. Natural phenomenon that occurs every 26,000 years.
