I can't believe I'm even going to chime in here... but as a destination bride, my chain's been rattled.

1st, there was not enough information in the orginal post for such a harsh comment. The bride didn't say, "I'm planning a destination wedding in Mexico and expecting all 500 guests to be there on the resort for a week, where do I start?

Maybe they don't have family, maybe the families are wealthy, maybe they are planning an elopement with the party afterward, maybe the majority of the family LIVE in Mexico...

It was just a completely out of line comment!

Your opinion is absolutely valid and it is appropriate to express how difficult it can be for guests who have to travel. Just consider that you may not know all the facts before you pass judgement.

My first wedding was in my hometown where we were living, so it was a 'destination' for all of the groom's family. If we'd had it in my exes hometown it would have been a 'destination' for my family.

This time, since we've both been married before, we are eloping, then having parties in his hometown and mine.

Am I to be spoken 'harshly' to for having a destination wedding or can you agree that I have a considerate plan?

Final word, it is the Bride and Groom's day, they can do whatever they want to make it special for them.

If it's your dream to get married on a beach somewhere, than you should do it.

First, think about what kind of wedding you want to have.
We usually try to get a sense of what range your guests would be comfortable with and what kind of ammenities they need, and then go from there.

Next, set a timeline with your agent as to when all the information, payments, documents, ect are going to be handled.

There are a lot of benefits to using an agent, but I believe the biggest one of all is that anytime you mix family, friends and money, things can get uncomfortable. Your agent should keep you out of that aspect completely. But a destination wedding is a big undertaking. I would recommend that you use someone in your area, and check their references!

So done with this topic.   Am done listening to selfish brides rationalize their selfish choices.  You either get it or you don't.

Weather its a destination wedding or not.  If the guest cannot afford to come that's ok.  She doesn't need to have a huge wedding that no one can afford to go to but feels obligated.  My suggestion for her is to have her dream destination wedding whereever she wants to go.  Then plan a small reception back home for when she gets back.  Maybe even make it Mexican Rivera themed so nobody feels left out.

Also, My fiance and I are eloping to Hawaii, we simply found a vacation pacakge online and are looking at wedding coordinators in the area for the ceremony.  Many wedding coordiantors will cater to wedding parties of 2 to 200.  So my suggestion is to find a few rough prices of airfare, hotel, etc for those guest who want to come (who knows, many by be thrilled at the opportunity and also use it as a vacation) And simply plan your wedding that way.

I agree................you don't!

It's not fair to the guests unless you plan to pay for everyone!!!

sounds like cosmogirl is extremely bitter because she lost her job.  weddings are suppose to be a time of happiness - you sound like a raging lunatic and getting all worked up over something that doesnt even involve you.   I'm all for destination weddings and think they can actually be less expensive for guests (a hotel in the caribbean is far less expensive than nyc for example) and people get alot more out of it.  Most the food/beverage for the entire weekend is picked up from the bride and groom, along with amazing group rates on the hotel and airfare.  If you think its a way for the bride/groom to try and sepnd less money that's absurd.

My best advice is decide where you want to go? Mexico, Jamaica, St. Thomas/Caribbean, Florida or the Bahamas. Then decide how many people will consider going with you. I am a processional photographer and I also consult people on what best works for them! Keep in mind a destination wedding is often time MUCH cheaper than a big wedding back at home. If your friends and family can make the wedding a little vacation people will be not only excited about going but set aside the money to enjoy the journey with you!
I think destination weddings are great and very affordable. Not to mention something wonderful you will look back on and say - I'm so glad I got married in a beautiful place with my closest friends and family!
Let me know if I can help. Enjoy!
Check out the Mayan Riviera - hotel Barcelo - it pretty stunning and the price is right!
