I need a flower girl basket for our flower girl (my sister). I am planning on making my own because the church where we we'll be getting married is huge! I think that the isle is 60 yards.... or longer. Anyway, it is more of a elegant formal style church. It's an old Catholic church  with all the gothic style architecture. The church is so ornate that flowers would be insignificant.  We need a huge basket for her. She has a very fancy dress it's a mini wedding gown. So a wicker basket won't work. It would be out of place. And all the of the flower girl baskets are way to small. Any suggestions would be great.

Have you thought about using a silver or tin basket?  There a large number of similar products that look Victorian / Gothic that should match with the church and the dress.  Large and will not mess up the dress… could work.

For my first wedding we used a Princess House crystal basket.  It was beautiful!  It was heavy enough that even if our flower girl dropped it, it would be ok.  But I think that would be too small for your church.  You could Google it and see if you can find one that would be big enough.

Hi,
my wedding is not till August 2010 but I already made my flower girl basket. I bought a fairly large wicker basket from the dollar store( larger than the regular flower girl basket). I bought some aqua (that's my color) satin fabric and covered the basket using glue and double side tape. I then used white feather boa to wrap the handle and then I stuck some rhinestones onto the basket with glue. It looks sooooo great, I even surprised myself. In all, it cost me about $3-$4. I also made the ring pillows with the same fabric and white ribbon. Maybe you can try that as well using your own colors. Good luck!

I wouldn't give her a very large basket. It would overwhelm her and a large basket is too much for a little one.

Make one of your own -- spraypaint a wicker basket white and line it with a white plastic bag. then get one of those wet oasis from a craft store; cut it to size, soak it in water and then add whatever flowers you wish. A nice floral mix from your supermarket should work.

Or give her a pomander covered with flowers.

I have two flower girls and I bought matching Longaberger baskets in white, pink, green and blue for them.  They are very well-made heirloom baskets and we are going to write a special message for the girls on the bottom that they can keep forever. You can get them in many sizes, shapes, colors, and liners.

All of these are great ideas.  But another cosideration.....why not have some petals already dropped on the aisle? I've seen it done.  Maybe even in a different color that the petals your sister will be dropping.  That way your sister won't be overwhelmed with a super sized basket.

Thank you all so much. My sister is a 7 year old. And she's tall for her age.

If dropping petals is the big problem, don't have her drop any!  You could get a smaller wicker basket with a bouquet sitting inside - when I was a flower girl, we had baksets that weren't bowl shaped, they were more like a taco, so the bouquet could just sit on it.

I hadn't thought of a silver basket before, that one's really pretty. Good idea!
