He proposed on our 10 year anniversary. I was so excited. But it seems as though I'm losing all of that in the way everyone is acting. I feel like I'm being rushed into descisions, and not getting the time I need to be sure of them, and now I'm really worried.

My mom, her boyfriend, and my M.O.H. went dress shopping with me on one day. Nothing sparked our attention at the one dress shop we went to. I wasn't surprised, I know it can take a while. We went out to dinner, and noticed that there was a bridal shop in the strip mall across the parking lot. We went there after, and they were still open, so we stepped in to check it out.

I told the lady there what I was looking for, and she said she had the perfect dress. (I don't remember her ever asking my price range, which is a bit annoying, but maybe it was on the card I filled out, I don't remember) I tried it on, and everyone (including me) said "Wow"

It's a beautiful dress, but... I really don't know if it's *the* dress. I felt like everyone was so excited about it, and in such a rush for me to get it (The wedding is June 12, 2010) that I bought it anyway, even though I had doubts.

The neckline is straight, I was hoping for sweetheart. That would be ok, but I really don't like the skirt. It's all gathers, and I think it looks too fussy, and kind of like it's melting.

The shape is what I wanted, and it looks good on me, but I was hoping for something more simple and elegant. Now I don't know what to do.

Any advice? I've already charged the dress, so I don't really know what my options are.

Thanks.

if you got it at davids bridal you have 90 days to get a refund but you have to buy a dress or something to the same amount in the store. If its not davids bridal, maybe they have a policy similiar?

Check with where you got it to see what their policy is. You may be able to get a refund or a partial refund.

If not, and you really don't like it, try selling it on craigslist or ebay. Then  you wouldn't be out the full amount.

Hmm... well, if you've paid for it and don't want to go through trying to sell it and buy another, you may still have options.

The neckline can possibly be changed by a good seamstress (maybe not exactly how you imagined it, but closer). The skirt maybe, too, so you can reach a compromise. Without seeing the dress, it's hard to say, plus I'm not a professional seamstress. This will cost more than your typical nip/tuck alterations, but it may be more cost-effective than getting another dress.

Something about this one made you happy. If it's details that can possibly be changed, take it under consideration. Plus, that way you'll really have a one-of-a-kind dress. :-)

Thanks guys. I think what happened was that this was the first dress that I had tried on that was the style I was looking for. I spent a long time trying to figure out what the most flattering style for my figure would be, and I figured out that dropped waist, A line would look really good. This was the first (And only) dress I tried on that was both, and sure enough, it looked beautiful. But the gathers drive me nuts. I feel like a kangaroo in front, and like my rear end is melting in the back. I'll try to call the shop I got it from. I don't know if all the gathers can be taken out without making the dress just look weird, but maybe they'll have some ideas. Thanks again!

I hope you could return the dress in exchange for another one at the same store.  Since it was off the rack, I don't see why they wouldn't take it back.

The least you can do is ask.

From now on, you only take ONE person shopping with you, and that's the person you trust most in the world to be honest about whether something looks good or not!  Promise?

I only took 3, and then only because mom's boyfriend wanted to drive Laughing

I may just be going nuts over this because it isn't quite right, and between working two jobs and trying to lose weight I'm more stressed than usual. I'm hoping I can go try on something more like what I've envisioned, and then find out that I don't love it, and the orignal is really what I want. I haven't gotten the dress yet, it should come in in February, so I'm not sure how that impacts things either.

Thanks again for the support and advice guys!

I totally understand how that might happen. Whenever I go shopping with my mom I never buy what I'd buy on my own. (And three is totally fine!) DId you call the dress shop? What did they say?

What Cosmogirl says, on possible exchange and shopping with 1 companion.

Gathers- if you are referring to the gathers where the dropped waist meets the gathered skirt (not pick-ups) -  most manufacturers build in a few inches extra in the hips of such dresses, since that is needed by many.  You can take out the excess, but cannot add more.

Talk to someone immediately, while return is still possible.  Dresses are made in units- the gathered skirt can be detached from the dress, material taken from the too big front to remove the Kangeroo pouch, and be more in keeping with the back, or gathers reapportioned, so there is less pouffe in front, and some more defined pouffe where the melting butt was in back.
There are a very few straight top bodices which cannot be modified to sweetheart necklines, due to embellishments.  Most can either be re-shped a little down in center, have a satin or lace top band added that is shped, or a lace/ organza 9whatever material works) overlay sewn on the bodice so the semi- sheer lace in the overlay forms the curves of the sweetheart.  Lots of options that are not so costly in a seamstresses time that they would be a problem.

Do you have a picture of the dress, or manufacturers name and model, to see on a website?

Oh Hun!!  I would be worried and stressed about this too.

I think you should go back to the store right away and try it on again (their sample).  Also get them to take pictures of you in the dress from the front, back and side.  Since you already paid for it they shouldn't have a problem with it.  (If they do, tell them you need pics for your hairdresser, and to match up a veil, headpiece or whatever.  If you really feel it is not the right dress once you have it on, talk to them about it and see what they can do for you.

3 years ago, my BFF and I were at a huge Bridal Show planning her wedding and they had a room set-up for an "off-the-rack" sale.  She found a dress and we both loved it.  It was 75% off and she of course snapped it up and took it home.  A few months later, she started to doubt it and  convinced herself that it wasn't right at all.  (The dress was kept at her parents house in a different city so she couldn't just try it on).  She was so worried about it that I drove her up there one weekend and once she put it on, fell in love with it all over again.  She just had some alterations done to make it more "her".

I hope it all works out.  It sucks stressing about the dress!

I'm the kind who makes a decision, crosses off the list and gose on to the next thing so I only went dress shopping twice.  I went once, came out in a dress and everyone started crying.  I had to step over to see a mirror so I hadn't seen myself yet.  When I saw myself I knew it was the right dress.

I didn't buy it that night I went back with my two moms (ah, the joy of a broken family) and they had the same reaction.
We bought the dress that night and I never looked back.

I had friends who insisted I needed to look at several more stores before I made a decision but I didn't want to.

My advice is try the dress on again with your mom or someone you really trust.  See if you're not having jitters or if you can have the dress altered.  If you made the wrong decision call the dress shop and see if they'll give you at least a store credit to exchange the dress.

I understand how friends get excited and rush into things.

What dress is it?  Can you attach a photo or the make/model of the dress?  I'm curious to see it now.  I'm sure it's beautiful!!

I have a wedding gown that I never wore, and there are plenty of dresses that were never worn or are samples for a fraction of the price. I included a link to the dress I am selling and I am willing to negotiate if anyone is interested. If I could go back in time I would have purchased from this site to begin with to save money.
