So I'm getting married this October, and have begun to think about honeymoon places. Up until recently, I was thinking about a cruise to the Caribbean. But October will be hurricane season, and I don't like to take risks, especially when I'm paying for it!

Sandals is really appealing to me right now. They say it's better for relationship building, compared to seeing people drunk on a cruise in the Jacuzzi. And I'd only be able to afford an interior room on a cruise. But at Sandals, I can get a room on the beach! The only bummer is you are restricted to one place compared to a cruise which goes to several places.

What do you guys think?

I was married last October and we went to Sandals Montego Bay in Jamaica.  (Neither one of us had ever been out of the country, so we were glad to experience that together.)  We both LOVED Sandals!  You can look into the resorts and see what ones you can "hop" to.  Some resorts allow you to go to 2 others that are nearby, still all inclusive.  You spend time there and then hop the shuttle back to your "home" resort.  That might be something your interested in.  There are still excursions you can go on, most of which are off the resort property, so you have to pay.  We spent all 10 days on our "home" resort.  But our butlers planned all of our dinners and our last night was at the nearby resort.  When we go back for our anniversary, we will definitely resort hop!  And because Sandals had such a great deal, we were able to stay longer then if we went anywhere else, UPGRADE to a HM suite and get the butler service!  I also recommend the couples massage if you can go to a resort with the spa service!  Very romantic!  Hope that helps you!

OMG Montego Bay is EXACTLY the place that the travel agent mentioned to me! And it's where you stay at one place but have access to all 3 resorts or something! I told my Fiance about Jamaica, and he said it might not be safe. What do you think? Did you feel safe there?

For me, I would be happy just laying out on the beach all day every day for 7 days. But my fiance is not really the tanning type of guy. Do you think there would be enough to do there so that I can have days to lay out and we can have days of doing activities?

This really helps! Thanks!

We are going to Ocho Rios in September/October and you can hop to all three. I was assured that the dangerous parts of Jamaica are on the other side of the island. Also the resort itself will definately be safe. As for being stuck on the resort you can actually do lots of things not on the resort. We are going to swim with the dolphins and sharks. We can afford all these extras because of the all inclusiveness of the resort. You will love Sandals

Oh wow thank you! I am so excited now! How did you pick Ocho Rios compared to the other places?

The main thing about Sandals that I really love when comparing it to cruises is that the hotel rooms looks sooo wonderful compared to a cabin on a ship! Laughing

I picked Ocho Rios cuz I want to swim with the dolphins and my hubby wants to golf. Our travel agent suggested Ocho Rios. She has actually stayed at every property.  The rooms do look beautiful. I am very excited. I heard there are amazing secluded waterfalls also.

We felt safe at Montego Bay.  The drive to the resort from the air port is kinda sad.  seeing the little shacks all over the place.  But the resort itself is safe.  They have activities everyday.  They have a beach party too.  lots of good food.  If you like fruity drinks, try the jamaican smile or the miami vice.
I have fair skin, so I was under shade when on the beach.  They have water sports that are included on the resort.  We took a water bike out one day.  There was plenty for us to do without feeling overwhelmed.  My DH played beach volleyball almost everyday.  AND, if you participate in the daily activities, you get points toward your next stay, and if you win an activity, they give you a bottle of rum!  They had a newly wed game one night, lots of laughs!

I think you will have fun at Sandals...I know its all we talk about and cant wait to go again!

I've never been on a Sandals vacation, so I can't comment on that, but I did take a Caribbean cruise in 2007 and it was totally awesome! We went on Royal Caribbean, which is less of a party ship than some, and we did not encounter any obnoxious drunks.   :)   Everything was sooo luxurious and relaxing. The ports of call (Ft. Lauderdale, Cozumel & the Bahamas) were all beautiful...the bright blue water and white sand...wow. As far as the rooms, we had an "oceanview" cabin, and while it was kind of nice to have the window, I'm not sure it's much different than an inside stateroom. The room was comfortable enough to sleep in (although the bathroom was on the tiny side), but we honestly weren't in it much between shore excursions and ship activities.

Also, we went in September, which is also hurricane season, and we were a little apprehensive at first, but the cruise folks said they generally just sail around any bad weather areas and go to different ports of call if absolutely necessary. As it was, we hardly felt any movement at all.

I have never been on a cruise but I am getting married at Beaches in Negril Jamaica (owned by the same company that owns Sandals) and then honeymooning at Sandals Whitehouse. My friend stayed there when she got married and she had a fabulous time! As far as Jamaica being safe, I have been twice (Negril & Kingston) and have never felt unsafe. I have been told that Sandals discourages people from going off the property--which is  a shame because there are many fun things to do outside of the resort walls! As long as you treat Jamaica as you would if you were visiting any major U.S. city (i.e use common sense & dont travel alone) you will be fine.

I get married August 1st and we are going on a 7 days caribbean cruise. We decided on a cruise because we can see several places than just one but if hurricanes is your conceren you have to think that a cruise ship can move and avoid the hurricane but a building can't.  Going to any caribbean destination during hurricane season you may still face the same problem whethere in a cruise or not.  Most people are afraid of going on a cruise during hurricane season but when there is a hurricane anywhere close to the destination previously set, the port of call gets changed to keep the cruise and passangers from harms way.   No matter wich one you choose, I'm sure it will be a wonderful experience with the one you love.  All we can do is hope we don't get any hurricanes during either of our honeymoon.

Ms. America

Thanks guys!

Besides the whole hurricane issue, I've realized that I'm a hotel kind of gal, and some of the Sandals resorts just look amazing!

So I think I've decided on Sandals..more specifically, Grande Ochos Rios Carribean Rivera...

Dopey for you: Which one are you staying at?

Getting married in October as well.  Will be goingto the Sandals in Ocho Rios too. Recommend by the Liberty Travel agent we used.  7 nights 8 days...can't wait.  No matter what you choose to do you will have fun. Pack the bathingsuit and the sunscreen and start making memories...Congrats!!!

MekaFfamu,

Which one are you statying at in Ocho Rios? I think there's 3 different parts of that resort, like the mountain side or the beach side. I'm staying on the beach side at the carribean rivera.Cool

Staying on the beach side. I am so excited I can't stand it.  I have 3 months left and it is taking forever to get here.  Have a blast Lindsay123 and take lots of pics so you can post for us to see later!

We are going to Negril, Jamaica in October.  We wanted a nice beach to walk on and our travel agent recommended this one.  It has 7 miles of white sand.  We looked at the the other Sandals in Jamiaca, but we loved the looks of Negril.  I think any Sandals Resort you will be happy with.  I have not heard any complaints about any of them.

Don't forget to bring your flip flops and nice silk sarong or sun dress. I just love the beach and getting pampered in spa

Check out my beach pictures, not in Jamaica but otherwise still pretty.

We are doing Sandals, but in St. Lucia. There are 3 resorts there so they do the "Stay at 1, play at 3" thing too... I like St. Lucia more than Jamaica b/c more of a rainforest. You can take bicycle rides to the waterfalls, tour a volcano, etc. All around more adventurous rather than an overdone version of Destin, FL... Since yo man is not so much a beach bum, perhaps you would enjoy looking up the Sandals resorts on other islands. We are staying at the Regency b/c the unlimited-play golf course is located there. That is also the other reason we chose St. Lucia: golf and water skiing!

I've been looking into the Sandals packages....I just don't know how to decide which one??  I don't want to go to a travel agent because I'm afraid the price will be higher than if I just try to book reallllly early.  I'm getting married in April 2010.  But, it looks like I can get a great deal for booking so early.  The trouble is i cannot tell the general atmosphere of the different islands/resorts just be reading the descriptions.  We are looking for something with great island appeal.  Something kind of like out of the movie Cocktail, hehe Tongue out  Beaches and night life, yet the ability to relax in our own little private "spot" on the island.  Anyone have any opinion as to which Sandals resort would fit us best for the atmosphere we are looking for?  I am thinking St. Lucia or Antigua??

Go talk to an agent i looked into bookin gmyself and it was exactly the same cost. As a matter of fact she was able to get us cheaper air fare. The resort is who pays their commisions. And most of them get perks to go and they have been to all and can answer those questions. Plus I got 250 credit for spa services for booking with my agent.

I found a better deal by going through Triple A compared to Sandals directly. I think travel agents are the best way to go. They find you deals based on your budget and preference.

Good luck!

FI and I are staying at Grande Ochos Rios March 22-26, 2010 and we couldn't be more excited!!!!!!!!!! We also booked thru a travel agent and it didn't cost any extra, plus they have been able to answer all of my questions. I felt like Jamaica might not be safe either but the travel agent calmed my fears about that too.  We haven't booked any excursions yet b/c i can't decide what we want to do, there are so many wonderful options. I'm just looking forward to some alone time with my honey and all the sun......

Hi there!

You will have the time of your life! I just came back from there! Which side are you staying at, the Manor side, or Riveria side? Either way, it will be a blast! For one whole week, the only decisions I had to make was, beach or pool today, and which restaruant are we eating at today? As long as you stay at the resort, safety shouldn't be an issue. It is a little weird because the area is poor, then you have the Sandals resort in the middle of it. You can also book tours at the hotel too. We did the Dunns River Falls tour! Very cool! We went on a huge boat and they let us snorkel for a while. There wasn't a whole lot of fish, but it was still nice! Then they took us to the falls! I had no idea we'd be climbing the darn thing! It was beautiful, refreshing, and a tad scary! What an adventure!

You will have a great time with your honey and the sun. Bring lots of sunscreen. The food is amazing! Definitely do Arizona, Valentino's, Orchids, and the Manor! Let me know if you have any questions!

We booked our honeymoon to Jamaica Whitehouse Sandals resort with a travel agent.  After we booked the rate of the room was reduced and she got us the discounted rate.  It saved us hundreds of dollars! I would use a travel agent again!
