Golly - I so don't want to do this, but my FH is so cute about the "traditional' things.  My compromise is to give my bouquet to the bride who has been married the longest.  Besides - we're 40--- the single ladies are few and far between, 12 or lesbians.  I think my fun gay friend John would get up there - that would be fun.

Oh my... if only we had met at 25.

TP I am doing the same thing as you. We are having an anniversary dance (thanks to some of the great ideas I got from some of the girls on here), and are giving it and the garter to the longest married couple. I liked that idea.

I never cared for the bouquet toss when I was single, so I skipped it (as well as the garter) entirely at my wedding. As PP said, most of our friends are already married or involved anyway.

TPgal - congrats on your upcoming wedding.  I have to say I've got you beat agewise - I'm almost 50!  And this is my first wedding, too!  So I definitely didn't want to do a garter and bouquet toss.  Instead, I'm giving a bouquet to a friend whose wedding I was in 25 years ago who will be celebrating their anniversary 2 days after our wedding.  And she just had open-heart surgery, so I think the gesture will mean even more to her.  FH will probably give the garter to my friend's husband, too.

I agree, but am kind of torn.  I never did like getting in front of everyone to try to catch the bouquet, so I want to have a dance for all the married couples and eliminate them one by one by the years they have been married, and who ever was the last to be dancing would get my bouquet and garter.  I think it's gonna be my grandparents, so I don' t know about the garter, don't think my grandpa would be thrilled with that.  We will probably end up doing the traditional tosses.  Any other suggestions??

We've decided to forego the traditional tosses as well.  We are only 30 and 31, but still most of our friends are already married or are happily single and not likely to get married, so we both felt it best not to put them in the uncomfortable situation of deciding whether or not to go out on the dance floor for these events (this was largely based on our own personal experiences).   Like others, we plan to give my boquet to the couple that has been married the longest.

As far as the garter goes, we have seen it done tastefully, but we have also seen a lot that have gone the other way, so we opted to just skip it all together. I will still wear a garter, but that will be for just the two of us later :)

I think we are going to do it, but mainly because of tradition.  Honestly I could live without it but don't want to take my bouquet home with me.  Most of the "single" ladies will probably be 20 and under mostly children actually, but they should be able to feel special too!

If I was going with a traditional bouquet I would, but I am carrying flowers in a handcrafted antler basket made by a family member. If I threw it it would probably knock someone out, LOL!

I was always shoved out of the way by some WAY-too-tall bridesmaid lol

I'm not throwing my bouquet, we're not having anyone single (besides my brother).
Take this pink ribbon off my eyes

No.  It is an outdated idea.  I will provide a single flower to all the women at the reception.  A wedding is a time to honor all the women present.  I do not agree with the concept of women struggling to get one bouquet nor that it means the women all want to be next to get married.  I want all the women to feel lovely and appreciated.

I guess I haven't even thought about. I was gonna do it because it's tradition. We have single friends and cousins. I do like the idea of the couple that's married the longest, but truly I think that is my parents, might be my uncle who is marrying us. We don't have any grandparents coming and even if they did come they are single. Come to think of it, out of all the aunts and uncles and cousins and friends... there are only a few married couples. So it wouldn't be much of a dance... but now I am re-thinking the toss because I don't want to be rude to anyone!

My maid of honor will be the only "single" girl at the wedding so I SWORE that I wouldn't do the bouquet toss!

Is it selfish to want to keep my bouquet? I too am 40...our friends are married or happily single. But, really I just want to enjoy it on our honeymoon. We are getting married at a local beach and having the honeymoon at the ceremony/reception site....local beach. I want to enjoy the moments as long as possible and everything that went with it.

If it is, I'm right there with you!   :)   I loooved my bouquet!
You could always have a smaller, "toss" bouquet made specifically to give away if you wanted to; then you could keep and enjoy your own flowers, too.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the bouquet toss if you have enough single ladies at the wedding... I think its a fun traditionLaughingand there's nothing wrong with not being married.  I don't see how this tradition would make anyone feel less loved.  Plus you don't have to toss your own bouquet, most florists will make a smaller similar bouquet just for the bouquet toss.  I'm 23 and will toss my bouquet for sure!!!  Cool

I kept my bouquet, and had the toss.  My gift from my florist was a toss bouquet.  And my friends who didn't want to participate, simply didn't.   Also, avoided the whole awkward garter "chase".  He just tossed it, but didn't have to look for it Wink.  We did both from the balcony of our reception site.  Got some really neat pictures while we were up there, too!

I have to do the toss. We have tons of kids (girls) in our familys who are between 14 and 24 and that is all they can talk about!! So... I decided that I would make one for the toss. It'll be half flowers and half suckers. For the garter, I think we are just going to hand it to his granpa who will be 95 at the time of the wedding.

Has anyone heard of announcing that the bouquet toss is 18 yrs +? I thought it was rude, like FutureMrs.Ted mentioned the girls 14-25 are the ones that do it... you would be cutting out half of people interested!!

Little Bean, I'm there with you.  I loved my flowers so much I'm getting a painting of them done for above the mantle.

Yeah I've never heard of 18+ being announced. Thats strange! I like the idea of having the couple's dance, and giving my bouquet to the longest married woman. I'm not so sure about giving away my garter though, especially if it was someone I knew pretty well (like an uncle or something) that would give me the creeps lol! I might just keep it :o)

Ohhhh, how I loathe the bouquet toss! My single friends (there aren't that many) would kill me anyway. Besides, I think it's crazy that for the toss you're considered single even if you're in a long-term relationship or engaged!

In movies you always see dozens of hungry-eyed women vying for the bouquet, but at weddings I've only seen legions of women running for the bathroom to get away from the toss!

I am totally against the bouquet and garter toss.  FH is kinda shy and would be mortified to do it in front of our families. Toss is jsut something I've never enjoyed.  As for an alternate anniversary dance- why not just hand the bouquet to your grandparents or parents, eh?   Why not give it to the couple whose wedding date is closest to yours, or the couple who has been married the shortest amount of time?

I'm going to do it just so I can say I did it at my wedding, lol.
The guests are going to be a mixture of married ladies and kids under 15.  But, what the heck!
Cool

I've gone to several wedding where it was stippulated "Sorry no kids." Kids can easily be crushed in the mix -- it's pretty much a matter of safety.

Plus what if a youngster catches the bouquet? ugh -- you mean a couple would be dumb enough to have a full grown man  put the garter on her leg??

Same goes for the garter toss: kids can get hurt in the mix -- I saw a full grown man get knocked over by another male that was much much larger.

Literally and figurateively.  The wedding I went to recently said 18+ and there were about 7 little girls under 9 sitting there staring just wanting to play too.  They were devastated that they couldn't join in the fun.

We are definitely not doing a bouquet or garter toss.  I'll be 56 on my wedding day, and the only people under 30 there will be my kids.  Plus, I really don't like encouraging the idea that all single people are frantically competing to get married.

I had never heard of the man who caught the garter place it on the woman who caught the bouquets leg! Only have I just heard of this on this forum. Any wedding I had been to they just took a photo together with the couple getting married. In which case it would be fine if a child caught it.

I hear ya on the safety thing, but I have never seen anyone actually say 18+ only and there hasn't been any casualties yet! If single ladies are hating the idea of the toss anyway, as is being said here, there shouldn't be too much of a brawl to the death where kids would get trampled anyway.

I guess you just have to read your crowd and decide what's best!

hate hate hate the bouquet toss!  Attended a zillion weddings when I was single and many of us would usually quietly and discreetly leave the room when it was announced.....(mostly because no one would let you just stand to the side and not participate....)

The only thing worse than the bouquet toss is the garter toss.  Gross.

I haven't seen either of these things done in years.  Thank goodness!
