"Mc" Newlywed!
 Reply    Report

I have now be married for 3 weeks and I figured it was about time to move over to this side of things. But first a quick update on how I got here:

Jason and I got married on 08/23/08, the wedding was wonderful, and we are slowly getting pictures of everything. As I get them I will start posting them. Then on 08/25/08, we were off to Maui for a week of sun, sand and relaxation. Back to Iowa on 09/01/08 and back to work.
For the most part things are kind of back to normal, and I don't feel a lot different....Jason and I have been living together for over 3 years now...so other than getting used to a new last name....and well the sex life ( we have been going out it like bunnies everyday and night since the wedding), things really haven't changed much.
We are looking to get out of our apartment now though, after the honeymoon we decided that we really need to be looking for a house, which comes at a good time since our lease is up in 2 months...just enough time to find a house to rent till we are ready to buy something. We love the area we live in now, so are looking for places close up... not to mention both of us will be working pretty close to home ( Jason's office is moving from downtown next week). it will definitely same us on gas, since it looks like we will be able to carpool everyday.
Well I guess that is about it for my first post..I will try to keep you guys updated on life with the "Mc's"

Congratulations! Sounds like you had a wonderful time, can't wait to see pictures! Hope you can find a place to live in. Our lease runs out next month so we too are in the process of finding somewhere else to go. In fact, I have to leave in ten minutes to go look at a place so I should really get off the computer!

Life has been crazy the last couple of week.... i'm sorry I haven't update more. Here is a quick update on things:

- Still working on finding a new place to live...with the whole financial world crashing...we are going to look at renting a place, rather than buying right now.
- Work is going good for both Jason and I ,we both have newer jobs and there are a lot of changes....most resently is Jason moving offices. It has done a number with our morning routine... but I think we have finally gotten it.
- Family is good, they have really started to get back into our lives...they gave us a 3 week break, but now are all up in our business. Which for the most part is alright...it just seems like we are not getting a lot of time alone.
- Jason and I had our first fight since the wedding day over the weekend. It was silly but there was a lot of screaming and crying. Even though we have been living together for 3 years...we are still trying to get used to sharing everything now....but we figure we have a life time to work thru stuff.
- Pictures....still trying to narrow down pictures for a book our photographer is making and also a video. It's hard cause there are so many to pick from. I think we have gotten it done to a good number...but we still have about 5 more we have to cut.
- Last but not least we are gearing up for the Jewish holidays, they start next week but My mom and I have already started making stuff. This is kind of the kick off to a whole holiday season....which will not end till after the 1st of next year.

Pictures are the hardest thing in the world to do I've decided. My husband and I have been married eight and a half months and we still haven't done ours. I've picked the ones I like, but I don't want to just say "these are the one's we're getting" - I want him to have a say and make sure that we mostly agree. Of course, doing it this way takes forever. Well, that and the fact that we're slackers sometimes.

Family is wonderful, I'm sure they'll settle down eventually. Don't be afraid to just take some time for yourselves. I know I sometimes feel that Tim and I don't get much time together, when really we spend all the weekend, and every night together. It's more about having quality time than quantity. It's something we're still trying to figure out.

Wow it's been a while since i have been on here. LEt's see what has happened since Sept.:

- We hit of 6 month mark as newlyweds , things are going great with us. We got thru the holidays and are now going strong in the new year.
- We had to stop looking for a new place to live last fall since there was a chance DH would lose his job, but things worked out and he even got a raise. So we hae started up our search again for a new place. Our lease is up in May so we have a couple of months to find something.
- I finally got my promotion and new position at work, which included traveling more. I'm really torn between liking the new job and being away from DH more. But we are working thru it, since he travels too. Both of our jobs are crazy busy now so when we are together we try to savor every moment.
- My brother and sister in law are having another child, they are having a boy and he is due in June. Which is kind of funny since their first child was born in June. The best part is everyone is leaving us alone with questions of children.
- Speaking of kids....we are still talking about whether we want kids or not. We have already decided that we will not do any kind of fertility stuff or adopt. If we would start trying and it didn't happen for us , then we would just figure it is not in our plan for life. Still we are trying to figure out if we would feel like we were missing something if we didn't have kids. I mean I have being with my neice and nephew but it is also nice to go home to a quite house or be able to just pick up and do stuff whenever we want. so I will have to keep you posted on that.
- Every couple of years my family does a family trip, while this year we are expanding it to my mother's sisters and their family. So it looks like there will about 15 adults and 4 kids going. We hae narrowed it down to the gulf coast of Florida but that is about it....since no one can agree on the exact place to go. We are also looking to rent a house since there are so many of us. So if anyone has and suggestions we are open to really anything. Right now we are looking to go as far south as possible, since the trip is planned for mid OCT.

I guess that is a quick update on our life. DH and I still can't beleive it has been almost 7 months since our big day...before we know it will be our year anniversary.

You're right, before you know it it will be a whole year :)

Sounds like you've got a good plan for the future going on. I can understand not wanting to try fertility, if it's meant to happen it'll happen. But then again, I'm still on the fence about whether I want kids at all. :)

How exciting about getting raises and promotions!  congratulations  and on looking for a house! We have a plan to look in about two and a half years. I'm hoping the time goes as fast as it normally does, because I want a house of our own already! Do you have any idea of what you're looking for?

Currently we live in a 2 bedroom/ 1 bath apartment, we have a huge living room, kitchen with eat in area plus a deck. So really it is a good size for just the 2 of us, but with thinking about the future I would really like an office or baby room, not to mention another bathroom.
So our hunt is for a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom house...or townhome. DH is still on the fence whether he wants a yard he will have to keep up or not. Personally I'm not really fussy, as long as I have a place for my flower pots.
Even though we both have good job, we also are not sure we really want to buy right now. Everyone is telling us that it is a "buyer market" so it would be a good time to buy a house, but on the other hand...anything can happen. We are really looking into a rent to own situation, that way we can make sure we like the house and everything.

As I have said in the past both myself and DH work for big companies. So up till last week we have been really lucky in that my DH's company has been downsizing all sorts of departments, but his own has been safe. Granted as people have been leaving for the last year they have not been replaced, but still no one has really been let go yet in his department. To our surprise he even got a raise at the beginning of the month and got his yearly bounus. Well that all changed last week, when everyone in his company had to take any where from a 2% to 10% decrease in salary. DH ended up having a 7% decrease, which in the end was not so bad, since he had just gotten a 5% raise, so it only really come out to be a 2% decrease, since he had only gotten paid 2x since the raise.
Then on the same day my company comes out and says they will not be giving any merit raises this fiscal year or next, so that means that the next time I would qualify for a raise would be July 2010. At least to soften the blow, they are not increasing our health insurance till at least 2011.
Even though we are not happy about what happened last week, at least we have jobs, and are not in any financial trouble. We watch the news every night and see all the lay offs, not to mention all the people who are looking for jobs.
On a happier note we are getting ready for spring to get here...and that means my birthday in the middle of next month. DH and I have talked about going away for the week since my birthday falls on a Saturday....but now I think that DH might be planning something different since he has been kind of avoiding the topic. The last time he did that he planned a big party for me... so I guess I will see what happens and let you all know.

That sucks about the wage freeze  My husband has one of those going on at his work too... they've frozen wages til July I think, when they're going to have another look. Something tells me they'll continue the freeze. My work hasn't come right out and said anything about wages specifically, but every month we have a communication session where the boss/CEO gives us an idea of what's going on (this is an international company), and I suspect something similar is going on here.

Like you, we're both grateful that we still have jobs. I get asked occassionally if my job is secure, but as the receptionist, I'm pretty much set  They need one for this firm, and I do PA work and a little bit of HR too, so they'd be a bit stuffed if they let me go  It's nice to be needed

YEs it is nice be be needed. My position changed in Jan. so I'm working in a smaller department now, but it is a needed department. So I have job security... still you never know.

To change the suject we are still on hour house hunt and have narrowed it down to about 5-6...so now it is time to get serious, not to mention we have about 60 days before our lease it up. I will keep you update on the hunt and that happens.

No we don't have picture of them yet. But we are still in the narrowing down process. This weekend we are going to gt it down to 1-2. Right now it is still the struggle of do we want a yard and a real house or a townhome.
I don't want to have to move again for awhile, so it is making sure the place will have everything we would want when we start to expand our family. DH doesn't think about the future beyond the next year or so...which is making the process kind of difficult. But we will figure it out.

I vote for a yard and a real house  How are you going with the narrowing down process? (I keep forgetting that it's still Sunday for you, it's Monday over here)

Thankfully, my husband is more of a future-thinker than I am, so I don't have that problem. I would want a place where I wouldn't have to move for a while either. When we finally get around to buying a place, I think I'm going to try and make it somewhere we can live happily til we can afford to build. We've both got very definite ideas of what we want in a house, none of which seems to be very common over here. We'd both like to build I think, but that's way out of the budget now!

So after a day full of looking at houses with yards and townhomes without. We have narrowed it down to houses with yards for 2 different reasons.
First we don't want to be right on top of someone else so to speak. Both myself and DH have been living in different Apartments or condos for all our adult lives and feel it is now time to get more space and privacy.
So we have narrowed it down to 3 different houses, tomorrow night we are going to go to our first pick and walk thru it again. We are trying to weight the pros and cons of each house, so that we make a good decision.
It's hard since each one is different.
So look for updates as we get closer to our decision.

That sounds like a good plan. It's pretty much what we'll be doing when we buy I think. At the moment we live in a one-bedroom unit, with units all around us (it's a two-storey block, we're on the bottom). Once we can afford to, I'd like to go somewhere where we don't have to share any walls!

Take a notebook or something with you and note down the things you like and don't like as you go through. Otherwise you'll try and compare them later and won't be able to remember anything! :)

I would probably make a list of the things I was looking for and keep track of how each house did. Things like where is the master bedroom. I will never understand why people stick the master bedroom right at the front of the house next to the garage/car port. It just doesn't make sense to me. I want a house where the master bedroom is away from the front. My husband is more concerned about what sides the windows are on, which dictates how hot the place will get, and how efficient it is. (at least one of us has priorities in the right place ;))

Yeah we have a list of questions for each of the houses we are going to look at again. Please my DH is totally on top of all the utlities and stuff like that. So we will be making sure the house is in the best condition possible before we get it.
To tell you the truth I'm exciting about moving to a home but also a little scared....I think once we have everything signed and know exactly were we are going, I will be fine. But the whole process is nerve racking.

Oh, I'm not surprised! I'd be a nervous wreck too. Tim and I had a look at our finances, and exactly what we wanted to do/where we want to go in the next few years, and I was stunned to realise that we could actually afford to buy now. We wouldn't be able to do anything else for about 20 years though, so it's be shelved for now. But even the thought "wow, we could afford to buy a house" freaked me out. It's like, I'm a grown-up now, because we can buy something.

Look like... WE ARE MOVING!!!! We agreed on a price and everything has gone thru, so all we have to do is sign on the dotted line and we will have a house. I can't beleive it...that after living in our apartment for so long we are actually moving into a house. I do feel like a real adult now.
So here is a little about the house:
-It is in a nice suberb right by a lake, our house backs up to one of the elemantary school.
- it is split level house with 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, nice eat-in kitchen, plus a nice family room in the basement with a fireplace.
- it has a 2 car garage and a nice back yard.

Now we have to start packing and cleaning out stuff. I'm just way excited about it all now.

Woohoo! You found a home!  How exciting!

And three bathrooms?! isn't that a bit overkill? Or is it that some of those are just toilets? Sorry, I've just never heard of a house with a 1:1 ratio of bathrooms to bedrooms.

When will you move in?

It's not 3 FULL bathrooms, it's 1 full bathroom... you know toilet, sink, and shower/tub. Then 2 half bthrooms...so toilet and then sink.

We were going to move in on 05/15, but now it looks like it will be 06/01...which is fine with us, since there are somethings that need to be fixed before the move.
I just excited that we can finally have a nice dinner party and no one will feel crowded.

Ack, Americans putting dates backwards  I was about to say, but 6 January is long gone... then I remembered, silly backwards dates :p

So you've got a couple of months then? roughly that at least.

Yeah, we can't have any sort of dinner party, we have a one bedroom unit, and no bench space, so the table is our bench. We also only have two chairs, so if we can only invite one other person over (they have to use the computer chair). Last time we had people over, we had to sit on the couch to eat, because there was no room! I understand the excitement there :)

Ahhh... I thought 3 full bathrooms would be too much... over here a toilet/sink affair is considered 0.5 bathrooms - but if there are two of them, then what would it say? 1 and two halves?

YEah it's 1.5 bathrooms.... I know it is weird how they list the bathrooms.
Anyway on a different topic... my 35th birthday was on Saturday and my WONDERFUL HUSBAND...throw me a surprise party on Friday night!!! I was totally surprised.. everyone that I would want there...was there. So this is how he did it:
We were supposed to just go to dinner and a movie on Friday....DH had called me earlier in the day and made sure I wanted Italian for dinner and we picked a place. I worked all day and came home to get ready.... DH kept rushing me...and I kept telling him we didn't need to be in a big hurry since we had lots of time...to which he just kept telling me that he was REALLY REALLY Hungry. So I got ready and we headed out....when we got the place...DH just kept talking to me and I so focused on him that I didn't notice my parents car in the parking lot or anything.
When we got into the restraurant they led us to the back and everyone yelled" Surprise"
It was great.... I got a ton of gift cards to home improvement places... and places to furnish the house. I couldn't have asked for a better brithday.

Congrats on the new house!! I know how you feel, we just bought one this week! It's been a crazy week. We actually went to look at another house last Sunday, but when we got there, it wasn't open and the sign said sold! I was disappointed so we looked at this other one that was open in the same area for the heck of it (it was above what we wanted to spend) and we loved it! We thought about it and decided to go for it (our mortgage person said we could afford it) so we put an offer in and they countered us so we went up $3,000 and they accepted it!! We're so excited!! What we paid is less than the other houses on the street, but it's an estate and the listing was about to expire in 2 weeks so I think they were anxious to sell.

We're talking about new things we will need too. We definitely need a new couch, patio furniture too since we'll have a deck.

We did our home inspection yesterday and the inspector said we're getting a wonderful house! Only 2 minor things wrong with it! He rated the house very well.

Our closing date is scheduled for June 29th.

I been trying to go through things the past couple months so when the time came, it wouldn't be as bad. We're going to start packing on Monday. We got boxes and bubble wrap so we're all set!

Congratulations on your new home!!

The only advice I can offer, as I'm in the same boat you are:
1) Take it one day at a time
2) Make a schedule or just a spreadsheet for all your payments (water, electricity, waste, internet, phone, hoa, mortgage, etc)
3) Note when the big trash days are for your old home... it comes in handy for the thinning out part :-)
4) Spray for weeds at your new home. By the time you are ready to move in, the weeds shouldn't cause too many allergies!

Best of luck!

Thanks for the advance.... we actually live in an apartment with a huge dumpster...so getting rid of stuff won't be a problem. I have already called and gotten dates and times for everything to be moved and/or transfered in the new place and old place.
As for the yards... that is on area that I'm leaving up to my DH...he has already been looking at lawmovers and other yard tool. I think we are going to buy them later this month and store them at my parents till we have possesion of the house.
It seems like we are really organized and everything is going smoothly... but I don't want to say anything too early...

So now that we are in the beginning stages of cleaning out and packing.... I have noticed what a pacfk-rat i have been. I'm finding stuff from when I first moved into our current place.
I'm not sure if I told everyone but the apartment we currently live in was my place first, before my DH moved in. So here is the FULL Back story:
10 and 1/2 years ago I moved back to IA from AZ... I know you are all thinking "why did she do that? " Well at that time I was in a very BAD relationship and neede to make a big change in my life. So I moved back to IA to be closer to family and old friends. It was a good changed for me plus it gave me a lot more opportunities to make money and be independent. So when I first moved back, it was to live with my mother and Step-father....just to get back on my feet and save a little. After about 9 months I was ready to find a place....and I did with a childhood friend. We lived together for exactly 365 days....I say that cause in hindsight we probably should not have moved in together...we were just a lot different then we were when we were kids. Anyway that bring us to may of 2000 when I decide that I need to have MY OWN PLACE... no roommates! So I find a cute place, it has 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, just prefect for a single gal. Well as luck would have it , I only lived alone for about a year then a friend needed a place to stay for a few weeks...which turned into a few months, then 5 months later I ended up having to kick them out for not helping out with bills. Once I had kicked my friend out, my brother ended up dropping out of college, getting into a fight with our parents and moving in with me. 3 years later he moved out...I was alone again but now dating my DH....so a year later he moved in and that is how I have been living in our place for 9 years.
Like I said in the beginning I have a lot of stuff I need to get rid of, from clothes to paperwork to just plan old junk. I'm sure it will take me till 6/15 to get it all done...working every weekend on it. But then again it is good to see how much I have changed and grown in the last 9 years.
TO change the subject a little...we are starting up the planning of our BIG family trip in Oct. It is going to be interesting to see if everyone will be able to agree on a place.

Packing is in full force now and I still have a ton to do.  It seems like once I think I'm finish, I look around and I still have tons of empty boxes and things to pack.  Oh well... I now have till 06/20 to get it done.  Even though we take possesion of the house on 06/15/09, the ig moving day is not till the following Saturday.  This will give me a few more days to pack and also time to figure out where to put everything in the new place.
Once we have the house I will get picutures posted of the inside and out.
On a different topic, my sister in law and brother are having their 2nd child next week.  It seems weird that it has been almost 10 months since we got married... they think they got pregnant the weekend of our wedding.

So it has been an exciting day for me.  First my 2nd nephew was born this morning.  He looks just like my brother and then we got a call about our house and we are able to get it first thing on Monday morning.  We thought it would be later in the afternoon... but everything worked out, so now my DH and I will probably be able to get most of our small stuff in next week, so once the movers come on Saturday for the big stuff we can be relatively ready to go.
I'm counting down the days till we don't have to sleep at our apartment....since it is spring/summer time everyone is outside and really noisy lately.  Dh and I are not old foggies by any means but when it is midnight on a Tuesday and people are still out drinking and playing music..... it is a little much.  We are really looking forward to a quite neighborhood and hanging out in our backyard.

Last night we drove by our new house....we just can't wait to get in there.  The people who are moving out were there cleaning and getting then last couple of things out...we just watch them for a while.  I really wanted to ask them if we could walk around inside but decided that I could wait till Monday.  We have pretty much decided were all the big stuff if going to go, I thought that I would want our master bedroom on the first floor but have changed my mind.  It is now going to be upstairs...and we are going to make the first floor bedroom our guest bedroom, then the 2nd bedroom upstairs will be an office for now. I have also mapped out the living room and the kitchen.
This weekend...our goal is to have everything packed....so come Monday we can start moving it.  Like I said before....on the night of the 20th, I want to have 99 % of everything in and only have to go back to the apartment to clean.

Moving is in full force now......  I was a packing machine over the past weekend... I finished the whole master bedroom, living room and most of the bathroom.  I even got rid of half of my old clothes.  It was kind of fufilling to give 14 bags of clothes and shoes to Goodwill.  We still have a few more bags of clothes to donate....from my DH.  Plus I'm sure I will have kithcen stuff to give away.  The more I pack and give away the better I feel.
Anyway pack to the moving process.  My DH and his friend moved all the small boxes I had packed over the weekend on Sunday, then Monday we moved 99% of all my clothes.  Now the rest of this week we have been packing and getting everything ready for Saturday.  We are bond and determine to have most everything out by  Saturday night and start really living there. I know in the back of my mind it will get ll done, but still I'm really nervous and will be until it is all done.

On other topics, my neice had her 2nd birthday and is doing great staying at my parents place while my sister and brother in law are out of the Country.  They are coming back this weekend.  My nephew's 2nd birthday is today and he is getting used to his new little brother.   With the new baby it makes me want to have one but DH and I are still in the deciding stage.  Not to mention we want to get settled into the house before we start trying.

THe move is OVER!!!! here is a quick update on the last week:

Thursday 06/18 - Spent the night packing MORE stuff

Friday 06/19 - DH and his dad moved the rest of the boxes and small stuff to the house.  Then we headed to W*lmart to get a new bedframe and some other stuff.  They didn't have any bed frames but we were able to get a new shower curtain.

Saturday 06/20 - MOVING DAY...... the movers got all the furniture out and to our new place....we only had to go back to the apartment once to fill our cars with breakable stuff.  Then I started to unpack, Dh moved all the boxes to the right rooms... I got about 1/2 the kitchen done, the mastbedroom mostly put together and 1 of the bathrooms done... before I almost passed out from being so tired.

Sunday 06/21 - brunch with my mom and step dad, then back to unpacking.  I finished the rest of the Kitchen, and 2nd bathroom, unpacked all my clothes and we started getting the living room done.  DH also mowed our lawn for the first time

Monday 06/22 - Had to work, then head over to my sister's for dinner and to hear about their overseas trip.

Tuesday 06/23 - Spent the night breaking down boxes and picking up trash...along with getting the last of the electrics hooked up.

Wednesday 06/24 - Stayed home from work and did laundry ALL DAY!!!  we had a ton saved up.  Then head out to get a few odds and ends.

Tonight - we ae heading to the apartment to get the last of the stuff out..... like frozen food and boxed food from the pantry.  This way I can go back on Sunday and clean the place before handing over the keys.

It seems weird that less then a week from now...I will be totally done with my former home of 9 years.

Moving is over...and the 4th of July has passed.  I think we are totally settled into the new house.  I still can't believe it took so long to get out of the apartment...we really should have done this last year.
Anyway on to the rest of our life....and new subject.  My newborn nephew is having a couple of ceremonies this weekend,so tons of relatives are in town...including my biological dad.  He will be here for the next 10 days....yes it is a bit long but he only comes once a year.  We are trying to make as much time as we can since everyone has to work...so it is a lot of dinners and weekend stuff together.

Wow it has been a LONG time since I updated you all.  so here is the "skinny"

We got thru the time with my Bio-Dad was here... it was 12 days.  We sent a lot of time with my siblings and it was fun.  But then again it was nice to see my dad head back to AZ and get back to normal life.
We have been really trying to get pregnant...and it is going good.  The doctors said it could be a good 6 months to a year before we really have a chance....but the "practicing" is way fun.
The house is awesome....we are starting to get new stuff....a little bit at a time.  I think by the spring we might even be ready to get new living room furniture.  I guess it will depend on the baby situation.
Last but not least...our 1 year anniversary is coming up this weekend...and I know DH has something big planned.  Since our anniversary is Sunday we are doing something on Saturday night... I just don't know what it is.  All I know is that I have to be dressed for dinner at 5pm.
Since the first anniversary is paper..I got really creative and got golf passes for DH and college football tickets to the Iowa/Iowa State game.  I think he will be really surprised.
I will let you know more once everything happens on Monday.

Our 1st Anniversary came and went fast.  Dh did a great job for presents, he got me 2 dozen red roses ( my fav) and then 2 years subscription to P*ople magazine.  He also took me to dinner at a really nice seafood place in town and then we went to 1 of the clubs here to listen to music the rest of the night.
DH was also way surprised with his presents... he totally loved them though.  Last week we went to the football game and he is going to use some of his gold certificate this upcoming weekend.

What else???  We are both working like crazy...and getting ready for vacation....it's only 23 more days.  Yes we have decided on a place, everyone has picked their rooms, plane tickets have been confirmed and everyone is getting clothes and stuff ready.
The jewish holidays are starting this weekend also, so the next 2 weeks will be crazy with family stuff.
Last but not least we are going to "WICKED" at the end of the month!!!  I love theater !!!
